Discover Åkrestrømmen: Trails, water and culture
Accommodation in Åkrestrømmen
Åkrestrømmen between Lake Storsjøen and the Mistra
Åkrestrømmen is located at the northern end of Lake Storsjøen, where the Mistra flows into the lake’s water system. Between Lakes Lomnessjøen and Storsjøen, Åkrestrømmen is known as a fishing spot for vendace (sik). Provincial road Fv217 runs from Åkrestrømmen to Femundsenden; there are also road connections to Rena on the eastern side of Lake Storsjøen.
On foot: Kveldsrunden
The marked Kveldsrunden loop is 3.2 km long. It starts at Sana, follows the beach, passes through a stretch of forest and continues along the Mistra to the centre of Åkrestrømmen before returning to the starting point. The route brings together different landscape experiences in one walk: take in the topography of Norway’s natural landscape and pass close to Lake Storsjøen, the Rena River and the Mistra.
With a quiet pace and a little luck, you may spot deer, moose, mink and ospreys along the Kveldsrunden. Such sightings depend on the season and cannot be predicted. Trail conditions may also vary depending on the time of year.
Sana and nearby Renåfjellet
Sana is located at the northern end of Lake Storsjøen. This nearby, family-friendly sandy beach has shallow water and a soft sandy bottom, with room to play, swim and sunbathe. The beach is signposted and easy to find from the centre of Åkrestrømmen; conditions may vary by season.
Nearby Renåfjellet has a family-friendly ski area with three runs. Together, they are 4,000 metres long, with a vertical drop of 215 metres. The beach and the ski area offer two different options for planning your trip: water and beach around Lake Storsjøen, or ski runs at Renåfjellet.
Culture, flatbread and fishing
Åkrestrømmen Cultural Park features statues and busts of three men who achieved great success in their respective sports. A few kilometres south of Åkrestrømmen, along Fv237, is Dampbåtvika, a cultural heritage site in the vicinity of the destination.
A local speciality is the flatbread from Østerdalen Hjemmebakeri AS: it is baked on a hot griddle and traditionally folded by hand. Since 1985, the bakery has been based in its current premises at Åkrestrømmen Foretningssenter in Rendalen. On request, Fred at May & Fred’s Fiske/Fritid can take guests to good fishing spots in the area, accompanied by an experienced fishing guide.
Rendalen: Nature and cultural attractions in the wider travel area
The wider destination of Rendalen is home to the Jutulhogget gorge. Its walls rise up to 240 metres, and the gorge is between 150 and 500 metres wide. A good trail leads to Veslehogget and into central areas of the gorge; there are several viewpoints along the entire northern rim. At the western end, there is a car park, toilets and rest areas.
The Sølen Landscape Protection Area was established by Royal Decree on 8 February 2011. It covers 456.4 km² and lies entirely within Rendalen municipality. The area is intended for simple, nature-friendly outdoor activities with minimal infrastructure. It contains cultural heritage sites and traces of cultural history, particularly trapping systems for reindeer and moose.
A marked pilgrimage trail enters Rendalen from the southeast and passes through Munkbetsetra, along Søndre Osdalssjøen, through Osdalen, via Østvollen and Renåtangen, and across Søljerøsta to Åkrestrømmen. Åkrestein bears carved traces left by numerous pilgrims and is considered one of the few enduring records left by pilgrims in Norway.
Rendalen’s cultural history can also be explored at individual sites. The Bull Museum is housed in the listed vicarage where the writer Jacob Breda Bull grew up. Rendalstunet comprises the Old Berger School, “Gammelskola”, the Bull Museum, also known as Prestegårdstunet, with eight buildings, and Bergslia with four buildings. Rendalstunet also has a café and a country store selling local products; the café’s seasonal opening hours may vary.
In Åkrådalen, traditional local dishes are available to order. The focus is on vendace from Lake Sølensjøen and game from the forests and mountains of Rendalen. The Åkrestrømmen village festival, also known as Rendalsdagene, takes place every year in mid-July, during calendar week 28. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
