Stor-Elvdal: Cultural Landscape and History
Accommodation in Stor-Elvdal
Stor-Elvdal combines cultural landscapes along the Glomma with churches, museums and routes to suit a range of interests. Koppang is a practical reference point for train journeys and cycling trips; you can explore other cultural and landscape themes in Sollia and near Atna. When planning your visit, consider whether you would like to focus on a cultural landscape, historical collections or a journey with scenic views.
Cultural Landscapes and Routes
Koppangsøyene is a 12-kilometre-long agricultural area along the Glomma in Østerdalen. In 2022, the landscape was recognised as a selected cultural landscape of agriculture. The Gamle Kongevei and Koppangsøyene route starts in the centre of Koppang and follows a cultural trail through a cultural landscape. A 2021 route description presents it as an easy cycling trip of about 14.3 kilometres, which can also be completed as a shorter walk. The 12 kilometres refers to the agricultural area, while about 14.3 kilometres refers to the cycling trip. Trail conditions and signage may change; check both before setting out.
At Kvitskjæret near Atna, a little below the summit, there is a good but steep viewpoint. The summit is 841 metres high, and the trail is seven kilometres long in total. These excursions offer different options: a cycling trip through a cultural landscape or a trail leading to a steep viewpoint near the summit.
For visitors interested in hunting, Stor-Elvdal’s municipal forests offer varied hunting grounds. Hunting is possible for all types of small game, as well as moose and reindeer. Hunting permits for hare, forest birds and grouse are also sold for areas in the municipal forests.
Churches and Museums
Sollia Church is a small stave-built long church dating from 1738. It is known for its beautiful paintings on all the walls and ceilings. In Koppang, the Norsk Kultursenter presents cultural heritage through art, literature, music, architectural history, food and drink.
The Sollia War History Museum, housed in the listed Amperhaugen building, preserves a collection assembled by Jo Øvergaard. It includes objects, uniforms and personal effects from Milorg, the Kompani Linge group Grebe, the German occupying forces and the National Unity Party, among others.
The Atnbrufossen Water-Use Museum was founded in 1994. The annual Fossedagene, held on the first weekend of September, focus on the Atnbrufossen Museum and the timber flume; the operation of the needle gates is demonstrated. Check the current programme before planning your trip around the event.
