Discover Fyllingsdalen: Nature, Activities and History
Accommodation in Fyllingsdalen
Fyllingsdalen offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: water and forest at Storavatnet, activities at Lynghaugparken and in the bicycle tunnel, and a history shaped by scattered farms and preserved buildings.
Outdoor activities: park, bicycle tunnel and water
Lynghaugparken has an outdoor skatepark covering about 800 m². The facility is suitable for skateboarding, BMX, scooters, inline skates, roller skates and parkour. This provides various opportunities for wheeled activities and parkour in one place. Information about the facilities and their use may change; check before your visit if a particular activity is important to your plans.
The park’s design also has a nature-focused emphasis, with a streambed and watercourse, riverside vegetation and adaptations for fish ecology. These features increase biodiversity there. If you are interested in the design of green spaces, Lynghaugparken offers another point of interest alongside its skatepark.
The Fyllingsdalen bicycle tunnel offers a different perspective. It features art installations, a digital sundial and benches in the middle. A specially laid rubber surface also makes it possible to walk or jog through the tunnel. A suggested bike ride from the tourist information office to Fyllingsdalen is listed as nine kilometres and takes about 45 minutes, depending on your pace. The route and actual travel time may vary.
The Storavatnet swimming area at Krohnegården includes a sandy beach, a section of pier and a bathing platform. There is also an accessible bathing ramp and a diving board. As seasonal facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before your visit. The woodland around Storavatnet is also a popular hiking area, bringing the swimming area and forest together as distinct options at the same local centre.
Getting your bearings and local history
Sælenvannet lies at the southern end of Fyllingsdalen. For further geographical context, Fyllingsdalen is west of the central mountain area, which includes Løvstakken.
Historically, Fyllingsdalen was characterised by scattered agricultural settlements that were important to Bergen’s food supply. Despite later development, several significant historic buildings and structures have been preserved. The area’s character thus brings together two themes: its former agricultural landscape and evidence that has survived later changes.
As an additional cultural point of reference in Bergen, Bryggen represents a different history: the historic harbour district had been established as a trading centre by the 12th century. From the 1960s onwards, small craft businesses gradually replaced the former trade in stockfish and goods.
Library and family activities
The library in Fyllingsdalen is designed as a meeting place, with spacious seating areas and improved access for everyone. It offers space for children and adults, books and board games, quiet reading and lively events. The activities described therefore include both quiet time with a book and shared activities.
Egget is a free overnight accommodation option for families with at least one child under the age of twelve. It opened in 2021, can accommodate a small family and has a wood-burning stove. Availability may change, so check before making plans. Fyllingsdalen Idrettshall is also listed as a venue for the free Åpen hall programme for children and families with children. As dates and seasonal breaks may vary, it is advisable to check the latest programme information.
Getting around by public transport
Bybanen line 2 runs from Bergen city centre to the Fyllingsdalen terminal. Skyss bus route 4 also serves the Løvås stop directly outside Fyllingsdalen Teater.
