Lindås: Church, Tides and Paddling Routes
Accommodation in Lindås
Lindås can be explored through two distinct points of interest: centrally located Lindås kyrkje and the waterways in the surrounding area. The local history is reflected in the church’s design, baptismal font and sculptures; for trips on the water, launch points and tides are important reference points. Culture and planning boat trips or paddling tours thus offer different aspects of a stay.
Lindås kyrkje and sculptures in the church park
Lindås kyrkje is centrally located in the largest settlement. The church is a wooden long church dating from 1865. The baptismal font is another notable detail: it is made of soapstone and is believed to date from around 1200. This puts it several centuries earlier than the church building. Its design, year of construction and baptismal font each offer a distinct point of interest rather than telling the story of the same historical period.
A 2025 description introduces sculptures in the church park depicting people who were important to Lindåsbygda. Those portrayed include the poet Aslaug Låstad Lygre and the artist Katharina Saltnes. Their names point to different cultural pursuits and add regional figures to the picture of the church. If you are interested in the place and its history, the church building, the older baptismal font and the sculptures offer several distinct, tangible topics to explore.
Waterways, boat trips and kayaking
The nearby Lindåspollane, also known as Lindåsosane, are often used for boat trips and paddling tours. For the kayak route to the Lindåsslusene and Kvalvågnes, good launch points are the old Lindås Brygge and Kvalvågnes, on the inner side of Lindåsosane. The easiest access to the lock island is from the inner side of Lindåsosane.
The waterway to Lindås passes through Lindåsstraumen. The sea locks regulate the tidal current flowing into and out of the fjord. Nearby, the current at the locks can reach 6–8 knots; it is calmer about two hours after the high tide listed in the tide table. If you are planning a trip on the water, take the listed high-tide time into account.
Another local factor is the tidal time difference: between Lindåsosane and the outer Lurefjorden, the times of high and low tide differ by about two and a half hours because there are few narrow sea passages. When planning a tide-dependent trip, account for the time difference between Lindåsosane and the outer Lurefjorden. For a trip timed around the tides, it is therefore worth checking the relevant time in the tide table carefully.
Landscape and surroundings
The sea area inside the Lindås Locks has its own herring population, believed to be more than 6,000 years old. Further afield is the Lurefjorden og Lindåsosane marine protected area. It encompasses the Lurefjorden and Lindåsosane fjord and poll complex in the municipalities of Alver and Austrheim in Vestland county and covers about 70 km².
Roads and paths in the area
Lindås is on county road 57, which runs across the Lindåshalvøya peninsula. The Vardebu day-use hiking cabin is also nearby. From the parking area at Kolås, it is about 400 metres along a good path to the cabin.
