Lysekloster can be explored through specific hiking trails and historical connections. Three themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: the trail to Lyshornet, Munkestien and the Storåsen loop. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Lysekloster, these hiking and cultural themes can shape the focus of your stay.

Hiking on different trails

The route to Lyshornet starts at the car park by the old monastery ruins. The first approximately 100 metres follow a narrow path before the route joins a better trail. It runs mostly through spruce forest and over firm ground, but some sections can become very wet after heavy rain; plan accordingly and take the weather into account. There is a small car park at the start. If you are travelling by car and need to use this car park, check the current parking situation before setting off.

The Storåsen loop starts at the car park by Lysekloster Sports Park. The starting points are therefore clearly different: for Lyshornet, use the car park by the old monastery ruins; for Storåsen, use the one by the sports park. This distinction will help you identify the right starting point when planning your trip.

Monastery history along the trail and at the chapel

Munkestien is an old trail between Lyse Monastery and Røykenes and passes the soapstone quarry. It is 3.9 kilometres long and runs from the monastery to Røykenes in Søfteland. On Munkestien, you can focus on the distance, destination and historic character of the trail; for Lyshornet, the narrow initial section and weather-dependent trail conditions are the practical planning considerations. For Lyshornet, the approximately 100 metres refer to the narrow initial section; the 3.9 kilometres, by contrast, is the length of Munkestien.

Lysekloster Chapel also offers a historical perspective on the area. It was built in 1663 in connection with the main farm. This gives it a different historical focus from Munkestien: for the chapel, the year it was built and its connection to the main farm are key; for Munkestien, it is the old trail between the monastery and Røykenes. If you include cultural history in your trip planning, you can choose between a building with a documented construction date and a historic route.

Getting to the monastery ruins

Bus route 601 runs from Osøyro to the old monastery ruins, where you can get off. Check the current timetable before travelling. This service takes you to the starting area for the Lyshornet route by the ruins. The Storåsen loop, on the other hand, starts at the car park by Lysekloster Sports Park. If you are combining your journey with a day of hiking, plan around the relevant starting point.
