Valestrandfossen combines historic sites with running and hiking opportunities. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, these different themes can help you choose the focus of your trip: local cultural history, a running event, or trails in the surrounding area.

Cultural history in Valestrandfossen

Karlagarveriet was built around 1910 and is now preserved as a museum. Bullahuset offers another historical connection: it was built in 1869 on the property where Ole Bull spent his summers as a child. Kongshall, in turn, is a youth center dating from the 1920s and is still used as a youth center. The three sites represent different chapters in the area's history—from museum preservation and the connection to Ole Bull to the continued use of a youth center.

Koppen comprises 14 indoor and outdoor buildings dating from the 17th century to the present day. Along the cultural trail at Koppen is a Viking Age burial site. The cultural perspective here therefore encompasses both a group of buildings that has evolved over several centuries and an archaeological connection. Courses in traditional craft techniques are occasionally held at Koppen Gard. Valestrand also became a center of tanning on Osterøy—another part of the area's craft history.

Running routes and trails

Valestrandsmarka Rundt offers a specific point of reference for planning a run: the route is 4.4 kilometers long and starts at Furubakken idrettsplass in Valestrandfossen. The event series includes 9 to 13 races per year; this number may change. The program also includes Christmas and New Year's runs. No official times or personal bests are recorded for these runs, and the exact event dates may change.

For a shorter route, the loop around Brakvatnet near Valestrandfossen is 2,595 meters long; the lake is about 2 kilometers from the destination.

A marked trail leads from Valestrand over Reigstadåsen and Erstadfjellet to the Brakabu day cabin. The cabin is located near Erstadfjellet at an elevation of 438 meters and can be reached from Valestrand via a natural trail. Important for planning: Brakabu offers no overnight accommodation and has no water. This makes it possible to consider the day cabin as a trail destination without mistaking it for a place to stay overnight.

Osterøy in a wider context

The wider destination of Osterøy also offers its own cultural and historical highlights. The Osterøy Museum is located in Gjerstad, in the center of Osterøy. It focuses on the history of textiles and clothing, weaving, local building traditions, and the local history of Osterøy and Nordhordland. Havrå showcases a different form of cultural heritage: the settlement consists of several farms, is one of Norway's best-preserved and most distinctive cluster farms, and is still farmed using traditional methods.

In Mjøsvågen on Osterøy, Den Grøne Fabrikken is a restored furniture factory in a historic setting of workshops and boathouses by the sea. Today it is used for art, culture, experiences, and events; offerings include creative workshops, painting classes, yoga sessions, talks, and concerts. The restored buildings in Mjøsvågen also house a café, a gallery, and a shop selling local products. These offerings broaden the picture of Osterøy, but should be distinguished from the profile of Valestrandfossen; uses and programs may change.
