Accommodation in Rong
Rong is a destination closely connected to the coast and maritime history. At the Kystmuseet i Øygarden, life and work on the coast take centre stage; Fjordparken is located in the town centre. The museum also offers opportunities for activities on the water, and you can start a hike from the grounds. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Rong, these different highlights can help you choose what to focus on: coastal history, boating activities or a landscaped green space each appeal to different interests.
Coastal life at the Kystmuseet i Øygarden
The main exhibition, “Livet ved havet”, at the Kystmuseet i Øygarden shows how coastal communities made their living over time. “Eg rodde meg ut” offers a closer look at fishing: the exhibition covers coastal fishing for household use and for sale at the fish market in Bergen. The two exhibitions focus on different aspects of coastal life: work to earn a living on the one hand, and fishing for households and the market on the other. The old salt house on the quay at the Kystmuseet i Øygarden houses an exhibition of outboard motors from different periods. It complements the exhibitions on coastal work and fishing with a look at maritime technology.
Boating activities and hikes
At the Kystmuseet i Øygarden, you can rent rowing boats and canoes, launch kayaks from the pier or moor your own boat. You can also easily start a hike from the museum grounds. This gives you a choice between activities on the water and on land when planning your visit. The museum is accessible by public transport via the “Ovågen” bus stop; the journey from Bergen bus station takes about 1.5 hours. Check the current connections before travelling.
Green space and coastal surroundings in Rong
Fjordparken is a landscaped green space in the centre of Rong, completed in 2020. The buildings of the Kystmuseet i Øygarden are surrounded by coastal nature in an authentic maritime setting. Nature, the sea, Fjordparken and the Hjeltefjord, with its sports facilities, are among the local features highlighted in Rong. When planning your trip, you can choose between a landscaped green space in the town centre and the maritime surroundings of the museum.
