Discover Skogsvåg
Accommodation in Skogsvåg
If you’re looking for a hotel in Skogsvåg, you can choose where to stay based on two themes: trails through the local landscape and the history of whaling. Both come together at Kvalvågen: part of the Skaganeset Trail runs along the bay, and the area is also associated with a distinctive history of whaling. When planning, it’s worth keeping these highlights separate: the section of trail by Kvalvågen, the forest trail up Storaskjenet, and the regional cultural attractions in Øygarden appeal to different interests.
Whaling history at Kvalvågen
Since the Middle Ages, whales at Kvalvågen were trapped in a net and then shot with poisoned arrows. This method of catching whales was used until the 19th century. A restored Kvalbua can also be seen at Kvalvågen, providing a tangible connection to this history. Another historical landmark is the capture of the last minke whale in Skogsvågen in 1960.
Two trails, different highlights
The Skaganeset Trail and the trail up Storaskjenet offer different experiences. Part of the Skaganeset Trail runs along Kvalvågen. By contrast, the marked trail up Storaskjenet passes through the forest and features climbing ropes and swings. The summit offers lovely views. If you’re interested in whaling history, the section by Kvalvågen is the most relevant; the trail up Storaskjenet offers a different focus, with forest scenery and summit views.
Trailheads and trail conditions
There is parking for two to three cars at the Skaganeset Trailhead near Storhaugen. From Austre Sundvegen, reach the trailhead by following Skogsvågvegen for 900 metres and then Storhaugen for 180 metres. Parking for the Storaskjenet Trail is at Sundhallen, Finkelhølsvegen 56. Check current parking conditions before setting off.
Some sections of the Storaskjenet Trail can be wet, so take this into account when planning. Sheep graze along the trail in summer, and visitors are asked to be considerate. These notes apply to the Storaskjenet Trail and complement the information about its route and trailhead.
More to discover in Øygarden
In the wider destination of Øygarden, the North Sea Traffic Museum in Telavåg has exhibitions about the Telavåg tragedy, the coastal resistance movement, and the escape route across the North Sea to the United Kingdom during the Second World War. The museum’s North Sea Traffic Exhibition includes a 25-minute film about the Telavåg tragedy. This historical focus differs from the whaling history at Kvalvågen.
The wider destination of Øygarden also offers nature attractions: 195 bird species have been recorded in the Tjeldstømarka nature reserve. The Hildringsbu birdwatching hut is on Skogsøyna and is open during the season. Check current seasonal access if you’re planning a visit.
