Ullensvang: Fjord Views, Hiking Trails and Cultural Sites

Ullensvang offers outstanding destinations for hiking and culture enthusiasts. Along Dronningstien, views open up over the Sørfjord and the Folgefonna Glacier; the route also passes through lush orchards with thousands of apple trees. Agatunet in Aga, as well as museums in Utne and Tyssedal, offer different highlights.

Hiking routes for different timeframes

The challenging Dronningstien runs between Kinsarvik and Lofthus, is 16 kilometres long and takes six to nine hours. The Husedalen route leads from Kinsarvik to the Hardangervidda plateau and into Hardangervidda National Park; it takes three to six hours. The timeframes overlap at six hours, helping you gauge how much time to allow for each hike. Seasonal conditions may change; check the latest conditions before setting out.

Farms, museums and cultural trails

The protected farmstead of Agatunet is located at Aga in Ullensvang, on the Sørfjord. The oldest building, Lagmannsstova, dates from 1220. Guided tours and exhibitions on art and cultural history are among the offerings; dates may vary. Aga Sideri in Ullensvang offers summer cider tastings with a guided tour of the historic Agatunet. Tastings are seasonal and booking arrangements may change, so check the details before planning your visit.

The Hardanger Folk Museum in Utne features exhibitions on Hardanger embroidery, traditional costumes and folk music. The museum also includes an open-air museum with several historic buildings. In Tyssedal, Kraftmuseet offers insights into Norway’s hydropower and industrial history, as well as activities for the whole family; the programme may vary.

The Hjøllo-Mannsåker cultural trail passes through the cultural landscape to the farms at Mannsåker and Hjøllo. Along the trail, 34 information boards tell the story of the first settlers in the area. In Kinsarvik, Mikkelparken is aimed at children aged one to ten and offers water play areas as well as a zoo. Age guidelines and facilities may change; check both when planning a visit to the park.

Folgefonna and seasonal activities

Folgefonna National Park borders Ullensvang. Established in 2005, it is one of Norway’s 42 national parks. At its centre is the Folgefonna Glacier, considered the southernmost and third-largest glacier in the country. In and around the park, seasonal activities offered by providers include snowshoeing, glacier hiking, ice climbing and a ski tour across Folgefonna, available from May. The ski tour includes an overnight stay.

Starting points, bus and boat

The Fruit Trail can be reached via several access points, including Lofthus Camping, Hotel Ullensvang, Ullensvang Gjesteheim, Hardanger Youth Hostel and the supermarket in Lofthus. Buses from Odda, Eidfjord, Geilo and Voss stop at this supermarket; the “Hardangerfjord Sightseeing” express boat also stops there. There are also bus connections to and from Bergen and Norheimsund. Check timetables and routes before travelling.

The Rv 550 between Utne and Jondal forms part of the Hardanger National Scenic Route. A bike ride from Utne to Herand can be combined with a return trip to Utne on the “Hardangerfjord Sightseeing” express boat. Timetables and bicycle transport are seasonal and should be checked in advance. A RIB fjord tour can start in central Odda or at Hotel Ullensvang in Lofthus; check the current departure arrangements and seasonal availability.
