Memorials and history
A roughly three-metre-high natural stone memorial to those who fell in the Second World War stands by Vinje kyrkje. Another natural stone memorial, around 3.5 metres high, is located at the entrance to Oppheim kyrkje.
The history of Gamle Vinje kyrkje is also part of Vossestrand’s cultural heritage: the church, around 200 years old, was demolished in 1872. Vossestrand thereby lost an important cultural monument. Those interested in historic buildings can visit the nearby Stalheim Folkemuseum, which has around 30 historic buildings from Vossestrand and Voss, arranged like an old farmstead.
Winter sports in nearby Myrkdalen
The family-friendly Myrkdalen Ski Centre is located near Vossestrand. It has 28.5 kilometres of groomed ski slopes, along with 22 varied runs and nine lifts. The ski area also includes parks and off-piste terrain. The figures for slopes and facilities give different perspectives on the ski area; check seasonal details before your trip.
Myrkdalen Ski School offers private and group lessons for all levels in alpine skiing, park, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and Telemark skiing. This can help you decide which winter sport you would like to focus on. As the current course offering may change, check with the operator in advance.
For cross-country skiing, Ă…rmotslia is opposite the ski centre. The groomed trails include a five-kilometre floodlit route. Grooming and lighting may vary by season. Dog sledding trips are offered on some days of the month at Lake Myrkdalen. The route is four kilometres long and takes around 30 minutes; check current dates with the operator.
Cycling and guided tours
Above the Myrkdalen Hotel is a purpose-built cycling track with three short loops: two green and one blue. It is suitable for beginners and children, while also offering features for more experienced riders; all types of bicycles can be used. The track is free to access every day. As opening and access arrangements may change, check the current conditions before visiting. An 850-square-metre pump track is located outside the hotel.
Cycling options in the area also include a skills course with features for different levels and bicycle rental for children and adults. The guided Bike & Hike tour combines a bike ride to Kvassdalen with a walk to the mountain farms at Vetle Grungen. If you plan to take this tour, confirm availability and dates with the provider.
Stalheim, valleys and hiking trails
Stalheim Hotel is around 500 metres above Nærøydalen, at the upper end of the historic Stalheimskleiva road. Several walking and hiking routes start near the hotel and lead into the surrounding mountains and valley; access and conditions may vary. Kvassdalen is a lush, U-shaped valley formed by glaciers. The 90-metre-high Sendefossen waterfall can be seen from an uphill path in the area.
The trails and landscapes offer different perspectives: the valley’s U-shape defines its character, while the waterfall can be seen from an uphill path. For your planning, it is worth choosing the activity you want and checking the latest conditions for it. This keeps cultural sites, winter sports, cycling options and hikes distinct as different ways to enjoy a stay in Vossestrand.
