Grong between skiing, river and culture
Accommodation in Grong
At Grong Skisenter in Bjørgan, one distinctive side of the destination comes into view: it is the largest ski centre in Namdal and one of the largest alpine ski areas in Trøndelag. At the same time, other themes range from the Nordleden to Stiklestad and the Grong bygdemuseum in Bergsmo to the Namsen. Your trip planning can therefore start with a range of activities; the key considerations are the season and your personal interests.
Skiing and seasonal activities
At 872 m, Geitfjellet is Grong’s main venue for skiing, snowboarding and telemark skiing. Bjørgan skianlegg is a regional cross-country skiing and biathlon facility. You can weigh up alpine sports and Nordic disciplines as different focuses for your stay. For the youngest visitors, Barneland at Grong Skisenter has a gentle slope and a slow lift suited to them. Check seasonal operations before making firm plans to visit. In summer, Grong Skisenter also offers an 18-hole disc golf course and mountain hikes; check availability separately for these seasonal activities too.
Nordleden and Gløshaug Church
The Nordleden runs from Grong to Stiklestad and starts at Gløshaug Church. The wooden church, dating from 1689, is about 10 km north of Grong. For your hiking plans, the 2026 advice is important: the National Pilgrim Center currently advises against hiking the Nordleden until its markings and infrastructure have been improved. Check this recommendation again before your trip.
Bergsmo and Formofossen
The Grong bygdemuseum in Bergsmo includes traditional buildings: BergsmolĂĄna, Ferjemannstu, a storehouse, a bakehouse, a smithy and a boat workshop. BergsmolĂĄna shows how the main building of a farm in Grong was furnished and equipped in the past. Formofossen has a 30 m drop and adds a striking natural landmark to the cultural history highlights.
Salmon, swimming area and getting there
The Namsen is considered one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. At Jørem, the salmon fishing area stretches over 4 km and is suitable for fishing from both the shore and a boat. Fishing there is seasonal, and dates may change due to regulations, so check the current dates before your trip.
A few kilometres south of Grong, the rock-formed swimming area Tømmeråshøla lies in the Sanddøla near Tømmeråsfossen. There, you can slide down smooth rocks, swim or sunbathe on the grass. River conditions call for caution. By the water, you can choose between different activities: seasonal salmon fishing at Jørem or a rocky swimming area on the Sanddøla.
Harran station is in Grong on the Nordland Line; trains from there run towards Bodø and Trondheim S. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable and connections for your travel date, as both can change.
