Inderøy: Art, Cultural Heritage and Local Delights
Accommodation in Inderøy
By the Granaelva River, right in the centre of Straumen, lies Muustrøparken. Eleven sculptures by sculptor Nils Aas make the park a tangible gateway to the art that can also be found elsewhere in Straumen. The Nils Aas Kunstverksted houses an art collection that Aas himself established; in the on-site workshop, visitors can work with a variety of materials. In Straumen, sculptures, a collection and hands-on creative activity thus offer different perspectives on art. If you would like to get to know Inderøy through its culture, you can enjoy both art in the park and the opportunity to work with materials yourself.
Art and Cultural Heritage
Another way to discover Inderøy’s cultural heritage is to visit Hustad Church. Dating from the mid-12th century, it is set in Inderøy’s cultural landscape. The Kjerkeplanken surrounds the church: this fence is built using the log construction technique and is rare in Norway. So, alongside the church’s age, a distinctive architectural feature is part of what defines the site. If you are interested in historic buildings, you can appreciate the church and its enclosure as related aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.
Local Produce and Tastings
At Berg Gård, Inderøy Brenneri offers bookable aquavit tastings with a guided tour. The distillery produces barrel-aged aquavit using caraway it grows itself, as well as local ingredients. A guided tasting therefore offers insight into both the drink and its ingredients and production.
The farm shop at Gangstad Gårdsysteri in Sandvollan is open year-round. There, you can sample and buy award-winning cheeses and farm-made ice cream. Check the opening details before you travel. There are also seasonal offerings: in summer, coffee and farm-made ice cream are available in the farmyard, and in July there is also a farm platter. If these offerings are important to your travel plans, check the current summer schedule in advance.
Inderøy Gårdsbryggeri offers beer tastings for groups and pub evenings at Bryggeriloftet. Its range includes craft beer, mead and apple juice made with local ingredients; the brewery also uses its own malt and hops. The tastings and pub evenings offer different ways to get to know the brewery’s products. If you plan to visit, check the latest dates.
Time Outdoors and on the Move
Sundsand is a recreational area with a shallow sandy beach, hiking trails, a playground and three sand volleyball courts. The different facilities offer several ways to spend time outdoors: at the beach, on a hike or playing volleyball. You can choose an activity based on what you would like to do during your stay.
Kjerknesvågen Kai has a guest harbour and a summer kiosk; the boat “Jekta Pauline” is also moored there. The surrounding area has beaches, swimming spots, fishing opportunities and several hiking trails. The facilities at the quay and nearby offer different ways to spend time by the water or on the trails. This is a different way to experience Inderøy than visiting its art and cultural sites.
Your journey can also be part of a cycling experience along the Golden Route. This combines train travel to Sparbu or Røra with bike rental and luggage transfer. Check the latest operational details before travelling. You can plan your trip around different highlights: art in Straumen, cultural heritage at Hustad Church, local produce, or activities at the beach and around Kjerknesvågen Kai.
