Vanvikan can be explored for trip planning through three themes: the express boat connection to Trondheim, hiking trails and local culture. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to consider which part of your stay you want to focus on. The ferry terminal is a useful reference point for getting there; when it comes to activities, you can choose between a hike to Fosenkoia, the nearby Munkstigen via ferrata and cultural attractions in the town.

Getting there by express boat and AtB

The boat landing in Vanvikan is served by the express boat ferry from Trondheim. The crossing between Vanvikan and Trondheim takes 25 minutes. As departures and operations can change, check the current timetable before travelling.

AtB also offers pre-bookable journeys: from Leksvik or Vanvikan to Route 810, and in the opposite direction from Route 810 to Leksvik or Vanvikan. The timetable lists arrival and departure times at the Vanvikan express boat terminal.

For the sample journey from Munkvoll to Vanvikan listed by AtB, a single express boat ticket is also valid on the bus or tram to the express boat terminal in Trondheim, and then on Route 810 to Vanvikan. While the ticket is valid, you can also transfer freely to AtB buses and flexible transport in fare zone B1. Check AtB’s current ticket rules before travelling.

Hiking trails and via ferrata

The hiking trail to Fosenkoia starts about 350 metres from the express boat terminal. The usual walking time is one and a half to two hours. Tourist association markers are located at the start and approximately halfway along the route. The trail follows a stone-paved section of an old transport route, which is considered a cultural heritage site. Along the way, you can also get close to a river and nature. As local access conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before setting out.

Munkstigen is located near Vanvikan, between Vanvikan and Leksvik. The via ferrata opened in August 1998 and is considered Norway’s oldest. Advance booking is required for climbs; a tour takes an average of around three to five hours. Munkstigen offers panoramic views of Trondheim, large parts of the Trondheimsfjord and the surrounding areas. Check current booking and operating conditions before your visit. For planning purposes, note that there are different time estimates: the usual walking time to Fosenkoia and the average duration of a Munkstigen tour.

Culture in Vanvikan

Stranda Church dates from 1897. It is a single-nave wooden church in the Swiss style, adding a focus on late 19th-century sacred architecture to the trails and nature experiences.

Borgåsen Adventure Trail is a short, family-friendly forest trail in Vanvikan. Along the trail are wooden figures depicting characters from fairy tales, fantasy and local stories. They were created by chainsaw artist and woodcarver Jostein Finseråsen. The trail’s figures thus lead from fairy tales and fantasy to stories from the region.

Vanvik IL Turlag is working to expand local hiking opportunities and maintain existing trails in Vanvikan and Indre Fosen. Specific plans may change; the association’s work concerns the hiking trails in these areas.
