Accommodation in Ekne
Ekne can be organised into three themes for trip planning: the history of Falstad camp, memorial sites in Falstadskogen, and viewpoints and fishing. The following places offer specific points of interest for each theme.
Falstadstien and Memorial Sites
Falstadstien is about 1,600 metres long and runs between Falstadsenteret and Falstadskogen. It is a state-secured outdoor recreation area. The route is therefore a distinct point of reference for trip planning, alongside the places themselves and their history.
History and Remembrance
The permanent exhibition “Ansikt til ansikt” at Falstadsenteret explores the history of Falstad camp during the Second World War. Falstadskogen in Ekne is a war graves site and a protected cultural monument. It is believed that more than 200 prisoners of war were executed there, although the number and their identities are uncertain. The “Arkbusering” monument in Falstadskogen, created by Odd Hilt, depicts three prisoners.
Views, Recreation and Fishing
Falstadberget is also a state-secured outdoor recreation area. It has a sun terrace with benches and tables, accessible to people with reduced mobility. Utsikten is a viewpoint about 1 km from Torvmyra; from there, the view stretches across Eknebygda and the fjord towards Skogn and Levanger. The distances refer to different things: about 1,600 metres is the length of Falstadstien, while about 1 km is the distance between Torvmyra and Utsikten.
Trout are found in Ekne’s freshwater lakes, while Byavannet has both trout and Arctic char. A local visitor brochure from 2017 names Sønningen as a fishing lake where trout weighing over one kilogram can be caught. Fishing conditions may vary. The details highlight different things: two fish species are listed for Byavannet, while the information for Sønningen gives a possible trout size.
Levanger as a Regional Setting
Levanger lies on the Trondheim Fjord and Levanger Bay. The wider Levanger destination also includes the Eidsbotn bird sanctuary as part of its natural attractions: it covers about 2.3 square kilometres of water, and almost 200 bird species have been recorded there. General access is permitted as long as nature is not harmed. Eidsbotten Fugleskjul is a birdwatching tower. In the wider Levanger destination, you can reach Ytterøy from the centre by ferry in about half an hour; check the timetable in advance when planning your trip.
Culture and the seasons can also be considered as part of the wider Levanger destination. On a self-guided, smartphone-based city walk, you can explore some of Levanger’s best-preserved historic houses; the availability of digital materials may change. Marsimartnan takes place around the turn of February and March, and Levangermartnan in July and August. Exact market dates vary.
