Routes through Mosvik

When planning a stay in Mosvik, local history and routes through the town offer two concrete starting points. The Mosvik Cultural Heritage Trail is a 4.5-kilometre historic walk around Mosvik. It follows the Mossa, passes Mosvikstranda, goes through the town centre and continues to the industrial area of Nervika. The trail ends at Vinje Bruk and the church.

There are 34 information boards along the trail. An English summary and QR codes provide further information. This connects the route with a clear historical focus. You can take the additional information into account when planning if you want to explore not only the route itself but also the town’s history.

Another option is the Mosvikrunden cycling loop. It starts in the centre and passes Vinje Bruk and Mosvik Church. Comparing the routes, a 4.5-kilometre historic walk is set against a cycling loop that starts in the centre and has named waypoints. The different ways of getting around and the listed stops can help you fit the routes into your day’s plans.

Church and Museum

A 1664 inspection report described the former church at Vinje in Mosvik as a stave church with a shingled roof and covered walkways on both sides. The chancel and eastern part of the nave had been rebuilt in wood in 1652. The dates refer to different events: 1652 to the rebuilding of parts of the church, and 1664 to the later description of its appearance.

The Mosvik Museum is housed in the former Grande School. The main building contains a 1950s classroom where the film “Skoleminner” is shown. The blacksmith’s workshop by the museum displays a collection of tools belonging to village blacksmith Ole Gjerde. The classroom and the workshop offer different perspectives, bringing together school history and film with tools from village crafts.

The church report and the museum relate to different periods: the former church was described in the 17th century, while the classroom evokes the 1950s. This lets you explore local history through specific details about buildings and museum exhibits rather than limiting it to a single period.

The Kaldalstua activity house is part of the Mosvik Museum grounds. It was formerly a forester’s residence; it is currently used as a meeting room and as the base for the Krambua handicraft shop. As its use may change, check in advance whether it still serves these functions when you visit.

The Mosvik Museum is listed as open on Saturdays from June to August, with group visits by appointment. Check current opening hours before your visit, especially if you are planning to visit the museum during a specific period.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

From the E6, the route to Mosvik goes via Røra in Inderøy and Provincial Road 755. After 25 kilometres, turn off towards the centre of Mosvik. This gives you specific landmarks to follow when travelling by road.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Mosvik, include your planned museum visit and preferred route in your stay planning. If you plan to visit the museum, it’s best to check your travel dates against the current opening hours.
