Discover Steinkjer: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Steinkjer
Steinkjer combines the history of a rebuilt town with distinctive church art, cultural offerings and activities in the town centre. Its attractions offer different perspectives: blue plaques reveal architectural history, Steinkjer Church draws attention to a work of art, and the cultural centre brings together performances and archaeological finds. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on local history, exhibitions or active pursuits.
City History and Church Art
A municipal overview updated in 2023 lists 21 buildings with blue plaques that showcase the heritage of the rebuilt town. The plaques provide information about each building’s original name, year of construction, client, architect and original function. This brings together several questions about architectural history in one place: When was the building constructed, who commissioned it, and what was it originally intended for? This information gives the town’s rebuilding history a tangible architectural dimension.
In the centre of Steinkjer stands the unconventional Steinkjer Church, a landmark and cultural attraction. On the front wall is a five-metre-high, non-figurative altarpiece by Jakob Weidemann, distinguished by strong red tones. The combination of abstract form and vivid colour shapes the artistic impression of the work. On 17 August 2026, the church was added to the list of churches of cultural and historical significance.
Cultural Centres and Museums
Steinkjer Cultural Centre has several halls and stages. Guided tours can be booked, taking you backstage, into the cinema auditoriums and the Green Room, where you can learn more about the cultural centre’s history and vision. The centre is also home to HEIM, the Egge Museum’s new venue for archaeological finds from Steinkjer and Innherred. The tour focuses on the spaces and development of the cultural centre, while HEIM puts archaeological finds from Steinkjer and Innherred centre stage.
Nearby, the main building of the Egge Museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions. The open-air museum presents agricultural culture through a farm complex and an extensive agricultural collection. You will find two different ways of exploring the subject: exhibitions in the main building, and the combination of the farm complex and collection in the open-air area. This distinguishes the open-air museum’s agricultural focus from the archaeological finds showcased at HEIM in the cultural centre.
