Stjørdal: Fortress, Rock Art and Fjord
Accommodation in Stjørdal
Stjørdal is defined by places of striking variety: Hegra Fortress represents Norwegian resistance, while Leirfall is known for its great variety of rock carvings. There is also a medieval church, a castle with a significant history, and museums. Along the fjord, recreational areas, trails and water sports reveal other sides of the destination.
Cultural sites from rock art to the fortress
Hegra Fortress is a national cultural heritage site and a symbol of Norwegian resistance. The fortress museum presents several chapters of its history: from the construction of the complex and neutrality guard duty during the First World War to the fighting of 1940 and the restoration in the 1980s. Exhibits include photographs, uniforms, weapons and personal belongings from that period.
You can encounter a different kind of history at Leirfall. The site is one of the largest rock art sites in Northern Europe and contains almost 1,200 rock carvings. Its motifs and compositions are varied; this very abundance makes Leirfall a distinctive attraction alongside the area’s historic buildings. Leirfall’s early visual art stands in clear contrast to the fortress’s military history.
Værnes Church also brings together different layers of history. Construction began around 1100; its medieval roof structures make it a unique cultural treasure. Inside are the Værnes chair from 1685, an altarpiece from 1639, frescoes and runic inscriptions. The church is two kilometres southeast of the centre and signposted from the E14. Steinvikholm Castle, meanwhile, was the archbishop’s permanent residence during the turbulent years around the Reformation in Norway.
Museum, garden and finding your way around town
Stjørdal Museum is built around Martin Moe’s collection, which includes antiques and natural history material. It is located in an old vicarage east of Værnes Church, two kilometres from the centre of Stjørdal. The museum landscape also includes Prestegårdshagen, a historic garden in the English landscape style. The museum collection, garden and church thus offer different ways to explore history and culture, without everything being centred on a single building.
Fjord scenery, trails and water activities
On Skatval lies Håmmårsbukta outdoor recreation area, a large, peaceful spot by the fjord. Its character is shaped by a long shoreline, extensive woodland and traces of cultural history. The area has hiking trails, picnic areas and benches, as well as a swimming jetty, a guest jetty, a deep-water quay and toilets. Some facilities may vary seasonally, so it is worth checking before your visit.
In Stjørdal municipality, Håmmårsbukta is also an access point to the outer route of St. Olavsleden, one of the pilgrimage trails. If you plan to follow this route, check conditions and signposting before your trip. Local conditions are also suitable for boat trips and kayaking and canoeing; check local conditions and access before setting out. Håmmårsbukta thus offers both trails and water activities.
Beach, climbing and fishing
The municipality describes Storvika as Stjørdal’s most visited beach and swimming spot. The area lies in a sheltered bay between shoreline rocks, close to the centre. It is used beyond the swimming season: hikers, climbers and surfers also come here throughout the rest of the year. Storvika has two climbing walls, whose safety anchors were renewed in 2018. Outside the swimming season, Storvika is still a versatile recreation area, not just a swimming spot.
For fishing in the Stjørdalselva, the Stjørdal Hunters and Fishers Association sells day, three-day, weekly and seasonal permits. Permit types and sales arrangements may change, so check the currently available options before fishing.
Hjelseng offers regional food to course and conference participants and groups attending events. The offering includes a locally produced meal, coffee, cake, lunch and dinner. It is available for groups of 10 to 70 people; advance arrangements may be required. The range of experiences thus extends from cultural heritage and fjord activities to a culinary offering geared towards groups.
