Sandnessjøen combines culture in the town centre with a coastal route, an annual festival and trails along the ridge above the town. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sandnessjøen, your interests can help guide you towards possible activities: an audio guide leads through the town centre, while the ridge offers viewpoints. You can also include the town’s cultural and leisure activities in your plans for your stay.

Culture between the park and the quay

The cultural and historical audio guide shares stories from the Viking Age to the present day. Its tour begins at the Sigrid statue in the park and ends at the quay farther to the northeast. The park is also home to bronze statues of historical figures Sigrid of Sandnes and Petter Dass, created by sculptor Skule Waksvik. You can see large-scale murals by international street artists on several buildings along the quay in the town centre.

Havnafestivalen is also part of Sandnessjøen’s cultural life and is locally known as “Havna”. It takes place every year on the second weekend in August. In Karivika, the festival offers a varied music programme and views of the coastal landscape. Before Havnafestivalen, Havna Ung also takes place, with music and entertainment for children and young people. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the event dates for your visit.

Coastal route and hiking trails

Sandnessjøen is on the Fv17 coastal route, designated the Helgeland National Scenic Route. The town is also a port of call for Hurtigruten’s coastal ships. The coastal route and ship traffic are two separate points of reference for finding your way around the destination; check schedules for your travel dates.

The trail to the stone cairn follows the ridge above Sandnessjøen southwards. There are several viewpoints along the way. In winter, you may need traction cleats or snowshoes on this route; check conditions before setting out. Here, the focus is on the ridge and its viewpoints, while the audio guide connects the park and the quay.

Leisure and seasonal offerings

The Kulturbadet in Sandnessjøen brings together a swimming pool, cinema, library and theatre under one roof, and offers activities for the whole family. Another option is Breimo Discgolfpark: the course has 18 holes and offers varied, challenging throws for players of all levels. As the course layout and playing conditions may change, check them before your visit.

Right in the town centre, a summer café serving local cuisine and all types of alcoholic drinks is located aboard the heritage-listed coastal ship Gamle Helgeland. The café is seasonal. From June through August, the seasonal tourist information office is also located in the Kulturbadet in the town centre, near the express boat and ferry terminal.

Swimming spot nearby

Near Sandnessjøen, Botn Havsbad is a swimming spot about five kilometres from the town centre. It is often used for swimming, barbecuing, sunbathing and playing volleyball. This lets you compare the activities in the town centre with a swimming spot nearby. As access and facilities may change, check current conditions before visiting.
