The area's features can help you match your interests and factor conditions such as seasonal visitor services or the state of a ski trail into your plans.

Railway station, pilgrim traditions and knowledge of wild reindeer

Hjerkinn Railway Station is part of the area's history: it is a former inn for travellers, with a tradition dating back to the 13th century. At 1,017 metres above sea level, it is the highest railway station on the Dovre Line. Dovrefjell Pilgrim Centre was established in 2010 and is located in Hjerkinn, where it provides information and advice for pilgrims. Visitor services are seasonal; check availability before your visit.

The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre's exhibition is located next to the railway station. The centre provides information about wild reindeer and offers insights into an important part of Norwegian history. The outdoor area includes reconstructed trapping facilities that show how people used the mountains in earlier times.

Cycling route and cross-country skiing

The cycling route between Dombås and Hjerkinn is 32 kilometres long. It follows gravel roads and is entirely free of motorised traffic. There are public transport connections at both ends of the route. Check current services before travelling if you want to include them in your plans.

In winter, Hjerkinnhøe rundt offers a different kind of route planning: the cross-country ski loop is about 20 kilometres long and starts at Hjerkinn Fjellstue. As it is a seasonal winter route, check its current grooming status before travelling. The approximate length and the trail status are different points of reference: one helps you estimate the length of the loop, while the other concerns its current grooming.

There are also links to historical hikes here: Hjerkinn is a starting point for routes along sections of the King's Road and the Pilgrim Path.
