Bjoneroa on Randsfjorden
Accommodation in Bjoneroa
Bjoneroa lies on a bend in Randsfjorden. At the mouth of the Bjonevassdraget, Randsfjorden forms a small bay. The village occupies the part of Gran municipality located west of Randsfjorden. The lake is 75 kilometres long and Norway’s fourth-largest lake. The bay by the village and the length of the lake give you two different scales for finding your bearings in this waterscape.
Landscape between lake and plateau
Near Bjoneroa, steep, wooded slopes rise from Randsfjorden and level off into a mountain plateau. The landscape therefore extends from the lakeshore across steep, wooded terrain to a flatter elevation. This progression from water to slope to plateau gives a concrete impression of how the village is set within the landscape.
Sørum Church and its history
Sørum Church in Bjoneroa is a simple long church with a western tower. It was consecrated in 1861. Its altarpiece dates from around 1700 and originally came from Grinaker stave church, which was demolished in 1866. The dates refer to different periods in the history: 1861 marks the consecration of the church, around 1700 the time when the painting was created, and 1866 the demolition of its original home. The altarpiece thus connects the church building with an older local church history.
Tangen ferry terminal
The Tangen ferry terminal is located west of Randsfjorden near Bjoneroa. The Randsfjord Ferry takes eight minutes to cross the lake and is Norway’s only inland ferry operating year-round. The terminal and crossing time are practical reference points for planning your trip: Tangen marks the location on the shore, while the eight minutes indicate the crossing time. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Fjorda and the surrounding waters
Nearby lies Fjorda, a highland area with many shallow, interconnected bodies of water. The area is popular for activities such as canoeing. This highlights two distinct types of landscape: Bjoneroa lies by a small bay on Randsfjorden, while Fjorda is characterised by a network of connected waters. If you are interested in waterscapes, this distinction offers a useful way to orient yourself between the lakeshore and the nearby highland area.
Cultural heritage sites in Gran
Gran, the wider destination, also has a strong cultural heritage. Steinhuset is the only secular medieval stone building still standing in rural Norway. Granavollen is the only place in Norway where two medieval churches stand side by side. The Søsterkirkene were built in the 12th century and are located on the pilgrimage route to Nidaros.
The Hadeland Folk Museum is an open-air museum with a hilly museum park and more than 30 historic buildings from the Hadeland region. Visitors can also enter the listed medieval old church in Tingelstad. These examples add further cultural history in the wider destination of Gran to the picture of Bjoneroa.
