Lom is a natural gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. In the centre, Fossbergom, marked trails meet cultural attractions and activities related to the natural world of the high mountains. Fossbergom is one of five settlements in Norway with the status of a national park village. Lom therefore offers a range of starting points for your stay: from a historic building and a local walking route to geology and climate at the visitor centre.

Fossbergom: stave church and open-air museum

Lom Stave Church was built around 1158 and is a protected heritage site. Its age and protected status make it a clearly defined destination for anyone interested in the history of the area. Guided tours covering the church’s history, architecture and special details are offered daily in summer. If you plan to take a tour, check in advance whether one is available during your visit.

The Lom Bygdamuseum, an open-air museum in Presthaugen, 300 metres from the centre of Fossbergom, offers another perspective on the history of construction. The museum comprises 22 preserved buildings. They illustrate building methods, as well as exteriors and interiors from 1613 to 1900. Together with the stave church, the museum offers different reasons to explore the area’s building history: here, a protected church dating from the 12th century; there, a collection of buildings and rooms spanning several centuries.

Hiking in the centre and on named routes

Marked hiking trails lead in several directions straight from the centre of Lom. Bergomsrunda is a specific option for a walk in town: this easy circular route runs through the centre and is about 2.5 kilometres long.

The hike up Lomseggen can also be done as a circular route from the centre. The described route passes Smith-bue and the Kvilarsteinen viewpoint. Another trail is called Olasvsråket: it leads from Tronodberget, continuing in the footsteps of Saint Olav.

There is also a specific route description for cyclists: Sognefjellsvegen runs between Lom and Gaupne. Some sections have gradients of up to 16 per cent. If you include the road in your plans, you can take the stated gradients into account as an important aspect of your route choice.

High-mountain topics and local brewing culture

Norsk fjellsenter is an authorised visitor centre for Jotunheimen National Park. At its Fjellviten centre, visitors learn about the geology and climate of the high mountains through playful activities. This adds a specific insight into the natural processes that shape the high mountains to the information available about the national park.

A local culinary highlight is Lom bryggeri. In Grjotheim in Lom, the brewery produces lager under the Lomb brand and places importance on using ingredients, history or geography with as strong a local connection as possible. A visit includes stories about the brewery’s history, a tour of the brewery and a beer tasting. Lomslosen also offers guided tours in the centre of Lom. As availability may vary, check before your trip whether the offer is available for your travel dates.
