Nord-Torpa: Hiking Trails, Mountain Scenery and Culture
Accommodation in Nord-Torpa
Nord-Torpa is the northern part of Torpa. The area lies between the Dokkaelva and Synna/Livasselva rivers, toward Langsua National Park. Farmland and mountain farms shape the varied cultural landscape. Broad mountain expanses open up in Synnfjellet; a belt of birch forest and a lower-lying belt of coniferous forest also form part of the landscape.
Trails in Synnfjellet and on Nylsfjellet
Synnfjellet has an extensive network of cross-country ski trails and dog-sled trails, as well as summer trails. The three types of trails appeal to different travel interests: if you’re planning around a particular activity, you can choose between cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and trails for the warmer months. This gives you a specific starting point for choosing your trip based on the activities that interest you.
On Nylsfjellet, a popular trail runs through the forest and above the tree line. The route has a viewpoint, is signposted and marked, and has a car park. Check the latest information about the markings and car park before setting out. Another popular mountain hiking trail is the Svinningsæterbrua–Spåtind trail. On Skjervungfjellet, the trail is suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The Røssjøkollane route offers a viewpoint and fishing opportunities; it also leads to Røssjøkollhytta in Langsua National Park.
Circular trails and other route options
The Folungtjena turvei circular trail goes around a pond. Its facilities include a barbecue area, a shelter, a fishing spot, and a car park. The Skardberga nature trail is also a circular route; fishing opportunities and a shelter are available there. Check the latest information about facilities before your visit.
Grønvold turvei offers a different type of route: the trail leads from a sawmill and a mill to a swimming area. Pusrud lysløype is used as a local walking trail in summer. At Bergevassknotten, a short trail leads from a cabin area to a viewpoint; it is signposted and marked with reflectors. These trails differ in their specific destinations and features: a pond, a swimming area, a walking trail, or a viewpoint.
Firefjellsstien was established in 2022 as a DNT trail across four peaks. This gives you different kinds of route descriptions to help you plan your trip, from a specifically designated short trail to a viewpoint to a route across four peaks. Information about use and facilities varies from trail to trail.
Åmot Church in Nord-Torpa
Åmot Church also gives Nord-Torpa a distinct cultural feature. The church is an octagonal wooden church dating from 1823 and is listed as a church in an official register. Its shape, building material, and year of construction make it a tangible contrast to the region’s trails and landscapes. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider a historic attraction alongside hiking and ski trails.
