Heggenes
Accommodation in Heggenes
Heggenes brings together a distinctive chapter of local industrial history, crafts and farm products. The main highlights are Øystre Slidre ysteri, Valdres Keramikk Ateliér and Moahaugen Gard. Nearby is Furustrand on Heggefjord, just below Heggenes. These varied themes offer several perspectives on the destination, from local history and design to regional food and leisure by the water.
The former dairy in the town centre
Øystre Slidre ysteri was built in the centre of Heggenes in 1928. Operations began on 3 April 1929 and continued until 1994. The year it was built, the start of operations and the end of its use mark three stages in its history; the dairy was part of Heggenes for more than six decades. With its distinctive chimney, it is considered an important building in the village and appears in the Flåklypa films. Its appearance in the films adds a cultural connection to the story of the former cheese production.
Furustrand on Heggefjord
Furustrand is on Heggefjord, just below Heggenes. Activities and facilities there include swimming, places to jump into the water, beach volleyball, ball games, canoeing and barbecue facilities. This range includes activities in the water, as well as games and other leisure options. A swimming cove for the youngest children was created in summer 2007; the water there is 40 to 50 centimetres deep.
The bathhouse at Furustrand was built in connection with Heggenes Hotel. After the hotel burned down in 1952, the bathhouse was the only building left standing. A Trillestig was laid between Furustrand and Helsetunet—a path suitable for pushchairs and similar use. The swimming cove and the Trillestig differ in practical terms: the cove is defined by its target age group and water depth, while the path is suitable for pushchairs and similar use.
Ceramics and local crafts
In the centre of Heggenes, Valdres Keramikk Ateliér offers handmade ceramics inspired by nature and tradition. The tableware is dishwasher-safe. The studio also sells paintings, silverwork and other local crafts, and accepts orders. Nature and tradition inform the design, while the tableware’s dishwasher-safe quality is a practical feature.
Farm shop and regional products
Moahaugen Gard is a traditional farm with sheep and pigs in Heggenes. The farm runs a shop selling a wide range of food made on the farm, as well as products from small-scale producers in Valdres and Innlandet. This brings together the farm’s own products and goods from small producers in the two regions. The storehouse sells kurv, fenalår, spekeskinke and pinnekjøtt; availability of these individual products may vary by season. If you are making a special trip for one of the products mentioned, check availability before you travel. The farm combines livestock farming with food sales: sheep and pigs are part of the farm, while the shop offers both the farm’s own food and products from regional small-scale producers.
