Rogne offers several concrete starting points for planning a stay: the architecture of Rogne Church, the history of slate mining, and routes for cross-country skiing and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Rogne, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your travel interests. The church offers a focus on architectural design and older art, while the routes are defined by activity, route layout, and difficulty.

Architecture and history of Rogne Church

Rogne Church was completed in 1857 and consecrated on 2 October 1857. It was designed by architect C.H. Grosch. It is the only church in Valdres with an octagonal nave, a square chancel, and a square sacristy. The bell tower also has a distinctive position: it sits in the centre of the roof. The church’s distinctive character lies in the combination of different floor plans and the tower’s position.

An older work of art adds to the building’s history: the altarpiece comes from the old Rogne Church and was painted by Ole Hermundsen Berge in 1780. The painting is therefore older than the church consecrated in 1857. The two dates help distinguish the period when the altarpiece was created from the history of the church building.

Slate mining and archaeological traces

Valdres Skiferbrudd is a slate quarry in Rogne. The history of slate mining there dates back to the 19th century. The company’s former economic importance is also noteworthy: for a long time, Valdres Skiferbrudd was the largest employer in Valdres, with more than 100 employees. The number of employees gives a clear sense of scale, while the long history of mining points to the area’s connection with slate.

Several large burial mounds can be seen at Skattebu. They add an archaeological point of interest to the history of the church and industry. In Rogne, different aspects of local history sit side by side: architecture, slate mining, and visible burial mounds.

Cross-country skiing and cycling in Rogne

In winter, Rogne has a floodlit cross-country ski trail. Rogne Idrettslag is responsible for the trail from Rogne to Juvike. If cross-country skiing is part of your travel plans, check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Store Øystre Slidre cycling loop passes through Rogne and by Rogne Church. The loop includes a steep descent towards Rogne. It is rated difficult at expert level, is not suitable for children, and is not continuously signposted; seasonal conditions may vary. When planning, take both the difficulty and the route-finding into account.

The routes offer different options for planning a stay: the floodlit trail is an option for cross-country skiing, while the cycling loop has a specific difficulty rating, is not continuously signposted, and includes a steep descent. Those interested in local history as well as activities can also visit Rogne Church, the historic slate quarry, and the burial mounds at Skattebu.
