Discover Fåvang through its diverse landscapes and cultural themes: the Tromsa flows into the Gudbrandsdalslågen here, Badedammen is located in the village, and Kvitfjell offers a wide range of ski runs. Nearby, you’ll also find Høgkleiva and the Tromsa waterway area. When planning your trip, you can choose between river landscapes, art, pilgrimage history and ski terrain.

River and historic trails

The Tromsa is an eastern tributary of the Gudbrandsdalslågen and flows into the main river at Fåvang. Tromsa bru, also known as “Den Høie Bro,” adds a historic touch: along the Gudbrandsdalsleden, it serves as a crossing point for travellers. The river and the history of the trail offer two different perspectives on the surrounding area.

Badedammen and the mammoth sculpture

Badedammen in Fåvang is a landscaped recreational area with a green lawn, swimming water and a diving tower. Near Badedammen stands “Mammuten” by Linda Bakke, a life-size replica of a mammoth skull that is twice life-size. The sculpture is near the exit from the E6 towards Fåvang town centre. From there, you can look directly towards the gravel pit where mammoth tusks were found. The artwork thus connects a prehistoric motif with a view of the discovery site.

Høgkleiva: traces of culture along the pilgrim trail

Near Fåvang, Høgkleiva lies along the Pilgrimsleden between Fåvang and Ringebu Stave Church. This cultural heritage site includes traces of Iron Age activity, a hillfort, a signal-fire site and a trapping device. Sculptures by Ånond Versto can also be found at the Høgkleiva viewpoint. A rest area for pilgrims and other hikers completes the trail stop. Here, archaeological traces and art meet the route of a pilgrim trail.

Ski terrain and river landscapes

Kvitfjell offers ski runs ranging from a green beginner area for children to Olympic-level downhill runs. If you’re comparing ski terrain, the range described extends from a beginner area to challenging competition-level runs. Seasonal operating details are a separate matter.

Nearby, rivers and marshland shape the Tromsa waterway area. Its characteristic landscape includes plateau-like mountain areas and a deep, narrow river gorge. River formations, botany, and terrestrial and aquatic fauna contribute to its biodiversity; the area is also important for outdoor recreation. This landscape offers a different focus from the cultural heritage sites around the pilgrim trails.

Ringebu as the wider destination

Other cultural sites in the wider destination of Ringebu add to the picture of the region. Ringebu Stave Church was built around 1220 and is one of Norway’s largest surviving stave churches. Ringebu Prestegard is a historic cultural site with art exhibitions; its Prestegardshagen garden features around 170 different varieties of roses. These places belong to the wider destination of Ringebu and are not features of Fåvang.
