Årdalstangen offers you a way to explore the fjord landscape, Dagfinnstein, and historic churches. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the sights in Årdalstangen from the other attractions in the wider destination of Årdal. This will help you choose which places and landscapes you would like to explore in more detail.

Dagfinnstein and Årdal kyrkje

Dagfinnstein is set into the cemetery wall beside the entrance to the cemetery in Årdalstangen, with an information board right next to it. The soapstone measures 195 cm in height, 72 cm wide at the bottom and 47 cm at the top, and about 16 cm thick. There are inscriptions on the sides, as well as traces of an incised image of a human figure. The measurements and markings give the stone a clearly defined profile, while the information board stands immediately beside it.

Årdal kyrkje is a wooden long church in Årdalstangen. It was consecrated on 19 December 1867. A stave church also stood at the same church site. The site is close to the river that flows from Årdalsvatnet to Sognefjorden. The church, its predecessor, and its connection to the river offer different points of reference as you explore the place and its surroundings.

Fjord, paddling, and trails around Årdalstangen

Årdalsfjorden stretches from Årdalstangen to Fodnes. Lærdalsfjorden, Lustrafjorden, and Årdalsfjorden meet there. Paddling is another activity you can enjoy here: Årdalstangen can serve as a starting point for a trip on Årdalsvatnet, which lies between Årdalstangen and Øvre Årdal. If you are planning to go paddling, check before your trip whether equipment and providers are available.

The starting point for the Middagshaugen hike is in the Tippen residential area of Årdalstangen. Parking is limited at the start of the trail. It is recommended that you park in the centre of Årdalstangen and walk the rest of the way. As parking conditions may change, check the current options before your visit. From Middagshaugen, you can look down over Årdalstangen and across Sognefjorden; visibility depends on conditions.

Nearby, in Seimsdalen, there is a facility for cycling families. Seimsdalsstrondi, a place to swim in the fjord, is just a short walk away. Access and facilities may change, so check conditions before your visit.

The wider destination of Årdal

Årdal lies at the innermost end of Sognefjorden and forms the western gateway to Jotunheimen. The wider destination of Årdal includes the Utladalen Landscape Protection Area, which extends across Årdal and Luster, and Jotunheimen National Park, which includes part of Årdal. The national park covers a total area of 1,151 km² and was established in 1980.

Vettisfossen has a free fall of 275 m and is Northern Europe’s highest protected waterfall. The route to the viewpoint starts at the car park in Hjelle. It follows Folkevegen, also known as Vettisvegen, for just under 5 km to Vetti Gard; from there, the path climbs for about an hour to the viewpoint. The distance and subsequent climb give you practical information for planning the time needed for this hike.

The Utladalen National Park Centre is a visitor centre for Jotunheimen National Park and the Utladalen Landscape Protection Area. It presents the natural and cultural history of Utladalen and western Jotunheimen. The Årdal visningssenter showcases the region’s metal industry from the 1700s to the present day. If you are planning to visit these facilities, confirm current visitor arrangements in advance.

The wider Årdal area also offers cultural heritage spanning different periods. In Øvre Årdal lies Ytre Moa, a Viking farm complex considered Norway’s most extensive known farm complex from the Viking Age, from 800 to 1050. From the early 19th century until the Second World War, Indre Ofredal was a fjord community whose operations were based on a water-powered mill and a sawmill; the old wooden mill can still be seen today.
