Seim is located at the mouth of Seimsdalen on the north side of Årdalsfjord, four kilometres from Årdalstangen. The name derives from the Old Norse Sæ(h)eimr and means “home by the sea”. If you are looking for a hotel with Seim as your destination, two different points of reference can help: the village’s location by the fjord and the activities in its immediate surroundings. Several hiking, swimming and historical attractions are associated with Seimsdalen or other places in the area, not exclusively with the village itself.

History in Seim and Seimsdalen

Seim and Asperheim are described as the oldest farms in Seimsdalen. Until the mid-1970s, Seimsdalen was traditionally characterised by agriculture. The history of the name Seim also reflects its connection to the sea, while the farms and the valley have their own historical context. Seim is also home to a selected natural habitat area; all fourteen areas in this category in Årdal are hay meadows.

A notable memorial site in the surrounding area is the Utvandrarstøtta, next to the youth centre in Seimsdalen. The memorial stone commemorates the first five emigrants from Årdal. Among those it commemorates was Nils Torsteinson Seim and his family, who lived in Seimsdalen. Nils Torsteinson Seim was the first person from Årdal to emigrate to America. The prismatic stone is 195 centimetres high, 48 centimetres wide and 19 centimetres thick.

Another historical story is associated with Bæutastain, the standing stone in front of Kletta in Seimsdalen. A legend about King Sverre and one of his men, who died there, is connected with it. The smokehouse in Seimsdalen soon came to be called Løytnantstova. Each of these places has its own significance: the Utvandrarstøtta commemorates emigration, Bæutastain is associated with a royal legend, and Løytnantstova is part of the history of a house in the valley.

Hiking, swimming and other activities

The hike to Bøttejuvet starts and ends at Strupesvingen, where parking is available. The access road passes through the tunnel to Seim and then continues uphill through Seimsdalen to the car park at Strupesvingen. The hike covers an elevation range of 600 to 1,322 metres. Along the way, there are views over Årdal, the fjord and the surrounding mountains. The route can therefore be understood in terms of its starting point, elevation range and the views mentioned, without confusing it with a trail directly in the village.

Seimsdalsstrondi is a short walk away and is used for swimming in the fjord. From Seimsdalen, you can walk to Nundalen; the valley is also a starting point for numerous mountain hikes. At Seimsåsen, Årdalstangen Idrettslag has established a ski centre with a ski lodge and cross-country ski trails. It is considered an important local activity centre. If you plan to visit the ski centre, check the latest operating information in advance. Seimsdalen also has a facility for families who enjoy cycling.

Getting there and the regional setting

The Seimsdalstunnel is 1,515 metres long, opened in 1969 and connects Årdalstangen and Seimsdalen on County Road 303. The valley’s former role in transport is also part of its history: Seimsdalen was a historic landing place on the north side of Årdalsfjord, where the quay was built in 1926. This information describes historical and geographical connections, not a current timetable.

Årdal is important for getting your bearings in the wider area: it lies at the innermost end of Sognefjord and forms the western gateway to Jotunheimen. This is the broader regional context; the specific places and excursions around Seim should be considered separately. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider Seim’s location on Årdalsfjord, the history of Seimsdalen and the activities mentioned in the surrounding area as distinct aspects.
