Bulandet: Islands, coastal trails and fishing history
Accommodation in Bulandet
Bulandet brings together small islands, bridges, white beaches and an open coastal landscape. The Værlandet and Bulandet archipelago combines routes across islands and bridges, nature experiences and insights into fishing history. For visitors who want to experience island life for several days, overnight accommodation is available in Bulandet; check which options are available for your travel dates before booking. There are also shops and other services in the village. Bulandet is also connected by express boat services to Askvoll and the surrounding islands.
Cycling and walking between the islands
Nordsjøporten connects Værlandet and Bulandet for travel by car, bicycle and on foot. The road between the two places is about 10.8 kilometres long and is a popular cycling route across six bridges. Joker Bulandet rents out bicycles, which can be returned at Joker Bulandet or Joker Værlandet; if you need a bicycle, check in advance whether rentals are currently available.
Walks and a hike to Gjørøy Lighthouse
Peaceful walks along the island roads lead to several viewpoints with panoramic views. Another option is the hike to Gjørøy Lighthouse: it follows paths and open terrain and is rated easy to moderate. The lighthouse stands 22 metres above sea level and offers wide views of the sea, skerries and small islands. Along the hike, you can also experience the rich birdlife and coastal nature of Bulandet. Choose according to your preferred destination: a lighthouse hike or peaceful walks to several viewpoints.
Fishing history and exhibitions
Within the wider destination of Askvoll, Bulandet is Norway’s westernmost active fishing community. Bulandet Bedehus was built in 1905 with 170 seats and consecrated for church use on 27 July 1909. The consecration therefore took place four years after it was built. The wooden chapel stands on the headland of Kjempeneset on the island of Musøya.
The Bulandet Exhibition in the old schoolhouse in Bulandet provides an overview of everyday life and fishing in Bulandet. Bulandet Temapark features a permanent exhibition and a changing exhibition on different topics; visits are possible by contacting them or by appointment. While the Bulandet Exhibition focuses on everyday life and fishing, the Temapark combines a permanent exhibition section with changing topics.
