Stårheim: Hiking, Fjord Views and Culture
Accommodation in Stårheim
When planning a stay in Stårheim, you can group excursions into three themes: hikes with different views, activities by the water, and local history. The destinations vary in trail character, views and historical significance.
Hiking and views
Stårheim has many hiking trails to mountain farms and peaks; most are well marked. A marked trail to Naustdalskamben starts at Stårheim Stadium; it is marked blue all the way to the summit. Naustdalskamben lies roughly between Stårheim and Haugen and offers views of the centre of Nordfjordeid and across the Nordfjord. Markings and trail conditions can change, so check the current trail description before setting out.
Blåfjellet is the longest hike in Stårheim and offers 360-degree panoramic views; from there, you can look towards Sunnmøre. Sethaugen offers a different experience: the short trail leads to a beautiful view over the village and the fjord. The hikes therefore differ both in their stated length and in the views they offer. Trail conditions can also change.
The route to the hike to Bauvatnet branches off from Route 15, 100 metres east of Stårheim Church, in the direction of Remmedalen. The trail is considered family-friendly and has only a gentle incline; at the lake, you can swim and fish for small crustaceans. Fannstøylen is also a family-friendly mountain-farm area and a starting point for several hikes. While Bauvatnet combines a specific destination with activities on the lake, Fannstøylen offers several hiking options. Trail conditions can change.
By the river and lakes
You can walk through the valley along the Stårheimselva. Fishing in the river is free, and there are also several swimming spots. Water and access conditions can vary, so take them into account when planning. You can also swim and fish at Løysingevatnet.
Church and local history
The present-day Stårheim Church is considered the third church on this site and stands on the same foundations as its predecessor, on the road by the fjord. In the churchyard south of the church stands the Orheim Stone, a memorial to Matias and Marie Orheim. The sculptor Anne Grimdalen (1899–1961) created the stone. The church and memorial connect the site's architectural history with the memory of two people named here.
A high church or a private chapel was probably built at the old chieftain's seat of Stofreimr in the early 12th century. The dating is uncertain; the building may have been either a high church or a private chapel.
A short trail leads to a large mountain farm hut at Røedsetra. It is associated with secret local celebrations of Norway's 17 May Constitution Day during the war. Røedsdammen is linked to the history of the area's first power station: thanks to it, each of the farms below had enough electricity to light one lamp in the barn.
