Bygstad: Fjord Landscapes, Storehesten and Local History
Accommodation in Bygstad
Bygstad lies on the inner Dalsfjord, surrounded by striking natural scenery and high mountains. Storehesten is a distinctive landmark, while traces of natural forces and history also shape the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Bygstad, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: hiking, fjord and mountain scenery, or local history.
Hiking at Storehesten
The hike to Storehesten follows a well-marked trail from Bygstad to the summit. At a normal walking pace, it takes about three hours; the route is 11 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 780 metres. Hiking time, distance and elevation gain provide different points of reference for planning your day and complement one another. Storehesten is 1,209 metres high and offers spectacular views. From the summit, you can see the Åflot Glacier, Jostedalsbreen, the mountains around Bergen and the North Sea. Mountain conditions can vary by season; check the conditions before setting out and allow some flexibility in your plans.
Another nearby destination is the Skaraly day-hiking cabin, at an altitude of about 700 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of the Dalsfjord, Storehesten and the Sunnfjord mountains. Its elevation and outlook offer a different perspective from the summit hike to Storehesten: Skaraly combines fjord and mountain views, while the panorama from Storehesten extends to glaciers, the mountains around Bergen and the North Sea. For the route to the day-hiking cabin, the car park is at Nygjeldshaugane; the trail to Storehesten is signposted from Bygstad. These directions apply to two different destinations. Road and parking conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Fjord Scenery and Osfossen
Nearby is Osfossen, the last waterfall on the Gaula before the river flows into the Dalsfjord. The waterfall is at Osen in Sunnfjord Municipality and is easily accessible from Fylkesvei 57. Coming from the south, you can reach Osfossen by turning off the E39 onto Fylkesvei 57; alternatively, you can take Fylkesvei 422. Check road conditions before travelling.
Bygstad is part of the Fjord Coast Regional and Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The park encompasses dramatic fjords, open coastal landscapes and striking mountain formations in western Norway. Bygstad is therefore also part of a broader landscape that includes fjords, coast and mountains.
Culture and Sport in Bygstad
Bygstad Church is a wooden long church dating from 1845. Its architectural style and date give the local history a tangible architectural reference. The landscape, too, bears clear traces of natural forces and history; traditions go back to the Viking Age. The travel experience therefore brings together a 19th-century church building and traditions with deeper roots. If you would like to consider the area’s history alongside its fjord and mountain scenery, this look at the building and landscape adds another perspective.
Bygstad Sports and Leisure Park was completed in 2023. The facility includes a multi-purpose hall, an artificial turf pitch, a three-lane running track, a gymnastics pit, a jumping facility and a bouldering wall. Rules for public use can change; check them in advance if you are planning a visit.
