Sandane – Culture, Views and Hiking Trails

Sandane combines hiking trails and views in Trivselsskogen with the building and boat history of the Nordfjord region. To help you plan your trip, there are three distinct highlights: the trails and their viewpoints, the open-air museum, and the Holvikejekta.

Views and Trails in Trivselsskogen

Trivselsskogen is a hiking area right by Sandane town centre. The trails begin in town and lead to a viewpoint overlooking Holviksfossen. The Utsikten viewpoint in Trivselsskogen offers views of Sandane, Sørstranda and the surrounding mountains. At the end of the stairs is a three-part steel section that connects directly to Utsikten. Fosseteateret at Holvikfossen in Trivselsskogen has a ramp 80 metres above the waterfall drop.

Draumekvila is a day-trip cabin in Trivselsskogen in Sandane. The walk from the sign by the E39 takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes; walking time may vary depending on pace and conditions.

Open-Air Museum and Regional History

The Nordfjord Folk Museum in Sandane comprises 44 historic buildings relocated there from various parts of the Nordfjord region. You can explore the open-air museum independently or as part of a guided tour. During the summer season, from June to August, guided tours of the buildings are offered daily; check the current tour calendar before your visit. The museum also includes a nature trail and opportunities to try traditional craft techniques. So, in addition to historic buildings, a visit also offers nature and hands-on crafts.

The Holvikejekta in Sandane is the only surviving large, open clinker-built jekt. The Holvikejekta building houses an exhibition of traditional boats from the Nordfjord and an account of the region’s 1,000-year boatbuilding history. Ramps along the walls of the building allow visitors to see both below and above the ship’s deck.

Trivselshagen in Sandane has a swimming facility, climbing opportunities and indoor activities. This combination offers different kinds of activities; check current operating conditions before your visit.

For music lovers, Glopperock is an event to look out for in Sandane. The festival is considered Norway’s oldest rock festival and began in 1980; it takes place annually on the second weekend of June. Check the current festival dates before travelling.

A Longer Hike in the Wider Gloppen Destination

For a longer hiking plan in the wider Gloppen destination, the Nordfjordryggen hike is in a different league: it is 22.4 kilometres long and takes about seven hours. It passes through Rypeskaret, Bjørndalen and Trivselsskogen, ending in the centre of Sandane. For hiking plans, this means two very different time frames: a walk of approximately 20 to 25 minutes to Draumekvila and a hike of about seven hours.
