Lake Hornindalsvatnet and the places and activities in the village showcase different sides of Hornindal. Alongside the lake, you’ll find the Anders Svor Museum, bathing facilities in the centre and trails that invite you to enjoy a range of activities.

Lake Hornindalsvatnet and the village centre

Lake Hornindalsvatnet is Europe’s deepest lake. At its deepest point, it measures 514 metres. It is also considered the clearest lake in the Nordic countries because no glacial river flows into it. Its depth and clarity are two distinctive features of the lake.

There is a bathing platform and a diving tower in the centre of Hornindal. The status of these facilities may change, so check the current situation before visiting. During a stay, you can therefore choose between the lake and specific facilities in the village centre as different things to enjoy.

Anders Svor Museum: art and architecture

The Anders Svor Museum is located in the village of Hornindal and is dedicated to the sculptor Anders Svor (1864–1929). It is housed in a building designed by an architect in 1953 and surrounded by a sculpture park. The building, park and collection give a museum visit its own connection to art and design.

The exhibition includes several of Anders Svor’s most important works. It offers insights into his working methods, subjects and typology, as well as his stylistic development: from detailed naturalism through classicism to symbolism. The exhibition can therefore be viewed not only through individual works, but also through the development of his artistic expression.

From the Nakkebruna day-trip cabin, you can explore Kalsedonbrottet via a short detour north of the trail. The quarry dates from the Stone Age or Bronze Age. Bus services to and from the centre of Grodås are available for the Nakkebruna hike. Check the timetable before planning, as services and times are important for your trip.

Another route description leads to Storesætra: the trail starts at the Hornindal Ski Centre car park. From the floodlit trail, follow the groomed ski track towards Bruasætra and Storesætra. The route passes through hilly terrain around Grendadalen, near the ski centre. The information was updated in 2022; grooming depends on winter operations, and conditions vary by season.

Hornindal Ski Centre is 4.5 km from the junction of E39 and Fv-60 and can be reached via a signposted road. The routes also differ in how they are laid out: the Nakkebruna trail is part of Hornindal rundt, while the Storesætra route starts at the ski centre car park and follows a groomed track. Check current route and operating conditions when planning each trip.
