Vadheim by the Fjord – Park, Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Vadheim
Vadheim lies at the end of the five-kilometre-long Vadheimsfjord, a north-running branch of the Sognefjord. The E39 and Fylkesveg 55 meet in Vadheim. The village is also a public transport hub with very good bus connections. When planning a trip, the fjord setting and the road and bus connections are therefore separate considerations. South of Vadheim, Fylkesveg 55 passes through the 1,658-metre-long Vadheim Tunnel. When looking for a hotel in Vadheim, activities in the village and its transport links may be different criteria.
Relaxation by the Fjord
Vadheim Fjord Park is an open and inclusive recreational area for locals and visitors. Swimming is possible in the park. You can rent boats in the centre of Vadheim to explore the fjord. The park and boat rental offer two different focuses: swimming is possible at Fjord Park, while renting a boat is all about exploring the fjord. If you are planning a stay by the water, these activities may appeal to different interests.
Trails and Traces of the Past
Fossen sti is centrally located in Vadheim and leads to an old mountain farm in Fossen dating from the 19th century, as well as an area with remnants of old buildings. The trail is a cultural heritage site because it once served the farm’s residents as a route to the trading post of Vadheim. So the focus is not only on the destination at the farm, but also on its former link to Vadheim as a trading post.
The Vadheim bedehuskapell
The Vadheim bedehuskapell was built as a prayer house in 1914. On 31 January 1954, it was consecrated for church use and granted chapel status. The 1954 altarpiece depicts Jesus in Gethsemane and was painted by Vilhelm Bjørknes. The chronology distinguishes the building’s original use as a prayer house from its later consecration and chapel status.
Historic Buildings and Bridge History
The historic group of buildings in the centre of Vadheim stretches from the quay to the former director’s residence, Casa Blanca, and encompasses several architectural periods. Unlike the bedehuskapell, whose construction and consecration history is tied to specific years, the focus here is on the ensemble and its range of architectural styles.
In Ytredal, about 2 km from Vadheim, the oldest of three generations of bridges is a stone slab bridge built around 1800. It was restored in the mid-1980s. Details of its construction and restoration thus add a nearby bridge to the historical themes around Vadheim.
A Distinctive Focus in Høyanger
The Høyanger Industrial Town Museum is located in Byporten in the centre of Høyanger. Byporten was completed in 1934, is designated a cultural heritage site and now houses the museum. The Vasskraftmuseet in Høyanger was established in 1986 in the former Kraftstasjon 1. One of the original units, with its turbine and generator, is a central part of the exhibition. Høyanger thus offers a distinctive perspective on industrial and hydropower history.
