Ornes combines an important cultural heritage with trails that explore local stories and landscapes. Three questions are especially helpful when planning a stay: Would you like to focus on Urnes Stave Church, explore a cultural trail at your own pace, or choose a hike with a stated duration? You can also choose between a ferry that runs daily year-round and a road route.

Stave Church and Poetry Trail

Urnes Stave Church has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. It brings together traces of Celtic art, Viking traditions and Romanesque spatial design. Inside, there is an exceptional series of carved figural capitals dating from the 12th century. Several artistic and architectural traditions thus come together in a single building: the capitals provide a specific example of figural carving, while the combination of traditions forms the broader art-historical context.

Since 2024, the STILLE Poetry Trail has wound around the stave church. The walk leads through the cultural landscape and combines nature poems by Norwegian authors with selected quiet spots. Two different themes are therefore at the heart of Ornes: the church’s architecture and literary inspiration along a trail through the landscape.

Ornes Cultural Trail

The cultural trail shares stories about Ornes at 15 stops open to visitors. There is no fixed start or end point; you can walk just one section or the entire trail. This makes it easy to choose the length of your walk: you decide whether to visit individual stops or follow the whole trail. Visitors are asked to keep off cultivated land and away from farmyards along the cultural trail. Please bear this request in mind when choosing your route, whether you explore just part of the trail or all of it.

Hike and Trail Destinations

The Ornes–Nystølen–Kinsedal hike starts at Urnes Stave Church. The walk from Ornes to Nystølen normally takes about two and a half hours; the trail towards Nystølen is well marked. An old, well-preserved cart road leads from the stave church to the Urneskroken farm. These offer two practical points of reference when choosing a route: an approximate walking time to Nystølen and a named path to Urneskroken farm. Trail markings may change depending on maintenance, so it is worth checking the current trail conditions before setting out.

Ferry and Road Route

A ferry runs daily all year between Ornes and Solvorn. The crossing of the Lustrafjord takes about 20 minutes. Check the latest timetable details and times before travelling. The Romantic Road from Skjolden to Urnes is 30 kilometres long; the road reaches Ornes and can be travelled by car or bicycle. This gives you different details to plan with: an approximate duration for the ferry crossing and a distance for the road. Which connection you include depends on how the ferry, cycling or driving fit into your travel plans.
