Fjærland lies at the end of the Fjærlandsfjord. The Bøyabreen, a glacier arm of the Jostedalsbreen, can be seen from a short distance from the main road in Fjærland. Together with the fjord and glacier trails, it gives visitors several specific points of interest to consider when planning their trip.

Museum and Book Town

The Norsk Bremuseum & Ulltveit-Moe senter for klimaviten is an interactive museum for the whole family. The museum also has an educational play park, designed to be interactive and aimed at children and young people. Visitors can therefore consider both a museum visit and an activity specifically geared towards younger audiences.

In Mundal, the Norwegian Book Town has around 4,000 shelf metres of books. Its sales outlets occupy a variety of former buildings, including ferry waiting rooms, barns, a bank, a cold storage building and a post office. The Book Town thus brings together books and several types of former buildings that now serve as sales outlets. Kaffistova is the Book Town’s book café in Fjærland, serving coffee and homemade pastries.

Experience the Fjord and Glacier

The fjord and glacier cruise on the Fjærlandsfjord operates between Fjærland and Vik or Balestrand from 20 May to 30 September. Check the timetable before your trip. For a kayaking activity with Fjærland Guiding, the company’s base in Mundal on the Fjærlandsfjord is the starting point. Guided tours are available on request. Dampen is a floating fjord sauna on the Fjærlandsfjord in Fjærland.

The hiking options also vary in duration and difficulty. From Øygard, a constructed trail with stone steps climbs through steep terrain to Flatbrehytta. There are two alternative routes: the shorter one is steeper and takes about 2 to 3 hours. The slightly longer option takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours and offers views of the glacier cascade at Supphellebreen, at an altitude of approximately 800 metres. The ascent is steep and challenging in places.

Another challenging hike leads from Fjærland to Supphellebreen, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres, in about 2 to 4 hours. This is the route to the glacier before you can set foot on it. Guided glacier hikes are organised from May to October. The two hiking destinations and their estimated times provide different points of reference: Flatbrehytta is the destination of the routes from Øygard, while the hike to Supphellebreen takes you to the glacier.

If you prefer to get around on two wheels, you can rent e-bikes in Fjærland. The route follows the fjord and valley along relatively flat, easy-to-ride roads. Alongside hiking, kayaking, a fjord trip and cycling are therefore different options to include in your itinerary.
