Slinde: Fjord Views and Local History
Accommodation in Slinde
Three specific landmarks help orient you in Slinde: Route S1 Njøs–Slinde, the history of the former landing place, and the memorial stone to the Battle of Fimreite in Nornes. They show different sides of the area: fjord views along a route, the development of a place name, and a historic memorial site.
Route S1 and Fjord Views
Route S1 Njøs–Slinde runs between Njøs in the municipality of Leikanger and Slinde in the municipality of Sogndal. It descends to Slinde; along the way, there are views of the Sognefjord from many points. If you also want to consider a route’s landscape setting when choosing where to stay, S1 offers a clearly defined route between the two places, with recurring fjord views.
Another local landmark is Ølmheim Siderhage: it is in Slinde by the fjord and not far from the centre of Sogndal. The viewpoints along the route and the location by the fjord can thus be considered different aspects of finding your way around the area.
Lunden, Slinde and the History of the Landing Place
From 1858, Lunden was a landing place served by Fylkesbaatane. In the 1880s, the name Slinde was used for the landing place instead of Lunden. Until around the end of the 1960s, Slinde, also known as Lunden, remained a landing place served by Fylkesbaatane. The two names do not refer to two separate landing places here, but are part of the history of the same location. This change of name helps put older references to the area into context.
Memorial Stone in Nornes
The memorial stone to the Battle of Fimreite stands in Nornes above the boathouses. From there, there are unobstructed views of Fimreite and the fjord. The site was chosen because the fallen were brought ashore and buried there. The memorial site therefore connects its location with the historical reason for choosing Nornes.
In 1999, the municipality built a footpath of planks and gravel to the memorial stone. If you plan to include the path in your visit, it is a good idea to check its current condition beforehand.
