Krakhella – Ferry Terminal, Coastal Trails and Mountain Area
Accommodation in Krakhella
Krakhella offers three useful points of reference for planning your trip: the ferry terminal, the hiking destinations in the Krakhellenipa and Ulvegreina area, and the Stranda ved Krakhella waterfront. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Krakhella, you can choose where to stay based on whether getting there, the mountain scenery or coastal activities matter most to you.
Getting there by ferry and road
Krakhella lies on the inner coastal route through the Krakhellesundet. Car ferries run from Krakhella to Rysjedalsvika in Hyllestad and to Rutledal in Gulen. The ferry route Rysjedalsvika–Rutledal–Losna–Krakhella connects Solund to the mainland. Check the current timetable for your departure.
National Road 606 runs west from Krakhella via Sula, Steinsundøy and Rånøy to Ytre Steinsund. The wider destination of Solund is also accessible by express boat, which operates between Bergen and Selje. Check the timetable for this service before your trip, too.
Mountain area and hiking destinations
The Krakhellenipa and Ulvegreina area consists of high mountains. Krakhellenipa is 569 metres high and the highest mountain in Solund. Hiking trails in the area lead to Krakhellenipa. Other trails run between Krakhella and Engdal, and to Salnae and Dumbetinden. The options therefore include both a named summit and a route between places, as well as trails to other destinations.
A road with a barrier leads to Ulvegreina. The area is also used for cycling and climbing on large rock faces. The mountain area is therefore not limited to hiking trails: cycling and climbing are also activities practised there.
Stranda ved Krakhella: coast and maritime traces
Stranda ved Krakhella is located by the ferry terminal. The waterfront area includes a harbour with older buildings and a shipwreck. Typical landscape features also define the area. Stranda ved Krakhella is used for paddling and diving; the rocky areas are suitable for swimming.
This gives you a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: the Krakhellenipa and Ulvegreina area centres on mountains, hiking trails, cycling and climbing on large rock faces. Stranda ved Krakhella, by contrast, combines maritime traces with activities on the water. You can take into account which side you want to focus on when choosing the main theme of your stay.
Solund as a wider travel area
The wider destination of Solund has more than 1,700 registered islands and skerries. The municipality has 34 mapped rowing and paddling routes; Solund also has marked hiking trails. These regional options complement, but do not replace, the specific mountain and coastal experiences in Krakhella.
In summer, the lighthouse safari to Utvær departs from Hardbakke. On Utvær, a guide leads you around the island along the North Sea Trail. Kystkulturpadling is a guided kayaking experience starting from Hardbakke, where you can learn more about local history, geology and wildlife. Check the safari dates, as well as the current availability and route details for Kystkulturpadling, in advance.
