Blaksæter: Hiking, Culture and Fjord Views
Accommodation in Blaksæter
If you are looking for a hotel in Blaksæter, you can plan your trip around the local hiking trails, cultural sites in nearby Ulvedal and the fjord views at Roset. These points of interest are not all in the same place: the hike starts in Blaksæter, while the church and cultural sites are in the surrounding area. Blakset also has its own connection to nature and history.
Fjord Views and Nature in the Surrounding Area
Nordsida Church in Roset, near Blaksæter, is a working church built of concrete. It stands on the north side of the Nordfjord in the municipality of Stryn and was also built for the residents of Blakset and the eastern settlements on Nordsida. From the church, the view extends far across the fjord. In Blakset itself is the natural monument Hatleim, a pine tree. This gives you two distinct local points of interest: the fjord views by the church in Roset and the pine tree in Blakset.
Hike to Ulvedalsneset
The starting point and car park for the Nordsida skule–Ulvedalsneset hike are at Nordsida School in Blaksæter. From there, the route initially follows a gravel road for about 100 metres; then you turn right onto a forest path. At the end of the forest path, the trail continues and is marked with red plastic ribbons. The approximate distance to the junction and the order of the trail sections will help you plan your hike. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.
Cultural Sites in Nearby Ulvedal
Baggehola is part of the cultural trail in Ulvedal. Stairs, railings and boardwalks offer views into the cave and over the rugged rocky terrain around it. The upper cultural trail in Ulvedal Kulturpark includes seven restored mill houses in Kvennhusdalen. The cultural trail is a circular route that returns to the starting point; it is set up for self-guided or guided visits. Check current visiting options before your visit. This lets you distinguish between the cave and rocky landscape at Baggehola and a walk through the cultural landscape with its mill houses.
Ulvedal is also home to Vetestova, a watch hut from the old fire-signal system. It is the only watch hut of its kind still standing in its original location. It connects the cultural landscape with the history of signalling.
Local History and Roads
The road to Nordsida is called Panoramavegen; Blakset is one of the settlements on Nordsida. In 1928, a simple village road ran for 14 kilometres from the quay in Blakset to Nos. The boat landing in the Blakset area is called Blaksæter; Blaksæter was first mentioned in a timetable directory in 1882.
Stryn as a Wider Destination
In the wider Stryn destination, Lodalen lies west of Jostedalsbreen. High mountains, waterfalls, the intensely green Lovatnet and the glacier in the background define the valley. Hiking and canoeing are possible in Lodalen; you can fish for free at Lovatnet, but should check the local rules in advance. In Oldedalen, hiking options range from easy walks to more challenging mountain hikes. This range can help you decide whether you would prefer a walk or a mountain hike.
Another destination in the wider Stryn area is the Loen Skylift. It takes visitors almost 1,000 metres uphill to a restaurant on the edge of Hoven. Operating hours vary by season; take this into account when planning your visit.
