Discover Åfjord: Coast, Culture and Activities
Accommodation in Åfjord
Explore Åfjord through experiences that appeal to a range of interests: on Linesøya, Øyholmen is a reminder of a wartime aircraft radar site; at Hosnasand on Stokkøya, you can swim on an Atlantic beach. There is also a cultural landscape trail in Utro, a summit hiking trail at over 600 metres, and activities such as paddling, fishing and diving. When planning your trip, a good first step is to decide what you’d like to focus on: would you like to visit historic sites, spend time outdoors or make room for waterside experiences?
Visitor Information
The tourist information office for Åfjord is located at Fosen Fjordhotell in Åfjord. It is run by the hotel reception and Fosen Aktiv. This gives you a specific place to go for tourist information, even if you haven’t yet chosen a particular activity.
For summer 2026, four tourist information locations were listed: at Årnes Sport in Parken shopping centre, at Sport 1 in Årnes Handel, at Coop Marked Stokkøy and at Matkroken Bessaker. Locations and opening arrangements may change after this season. If you plan to visit one of these places, check the current opening hours.
Traces of History and Cultural Landscapes
On Linesøya, Øyholmen is a former wartime aircraft radar site. Many gun emplacements and remnants of the station still remain there. These relics bring the site’s history to life: you can see both the emplacements and remains of the radar station.
The Utrostien trail in Utro, in Roan, offers a different historical perspective. It passes through an old cultural landscape with preserved burial sites and stone fences. These tangible traces shape the trail and set it apart from the former aircraft radar site on Linesøya. History enthusiasts can therefore explore two distinct themes: military remains on the one hand, and the features of a cultural landscape shaped over time on the other.
Hiking Trails, Via Ferrata and Cycling
The popular Dåapma summit hiking trail is in Åfjord, at an elevation of over 600 metres. Fosen Via Ferrata is a newly built climbing route in central Åfjord, on Mount Mælanakken. These two experiences offer different focuses: Dåapma centres on a summit hiking trail, while Via Ferrata is all about climbing.
Cycling around Linesøya is also recommended as an activity for visitors. Together, these options offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors: on a summit hiking trail, on a via ferrata or by bike around Linesøya. The range of activities can help you tailor your trip to your interests.
Experiences on and by the Water
Hosnasand on Stokkøya offers swimming on an Atlantic beach. If you’d rather paddle, several providers in Åfjord municipality rent out canoes and kayaks. These options suit different preferences: spending time at the beach or getting out on the water.
Nordalselva is designated a national salmon river and offers salmon fishing. Diving is another activity in Åfjord municipality, where visitors can explore shipwrecks and caves. The waterside offerings therefore include not only beaches and paddling, but also fishing and diving.
Another activity takes visitors by boat to salmon farming cages; they can also visit an exhibition hall about aquaculture. This combination of a boat trip and an exhibition adds a fish-farming theme to the nature experiences.
