Mausund: Island Culture and Coastal History
Accommodation in Mausund
Mausund is the largest fishing village in the Frøya archipelago and a lively community with a strong maritime culture. The village consists of Måøya, Gårdsøya, Aursøyan and Geitøya, which are connected by bridges and roads. Its island setting and coastal history shape the character of this destination.
Getting here and finding your way
Frøya is connected to the mainland by an undersea tunnel, so the entire journey there can be made by road. From the ferry terminal at Dyrøy on Frøya, you can reach Mausund by ferry and express boat on routes 825/820. Torghatten’s route 825 connects Frøya with Mausundvær, Bogøyvær and Sula. Timetables and services may change; check the route planner for connections on your travel dates.
Coastal history and culture
The Trøndelag Coastal History Museum on Mausund offers a glimpse into life on land and at sea in the past. Its perspective on both ways of life brings the maritime history of the island community to life.
The historical open-air play “Oda fra Havet” tells the story of the real-life fisherwoman Oda Markusen and is based on author Vidar Oskarson’s trilogy about the island community. The play is staged in Mausund every two years. The “Ut i havet” festival is also held here, featuring various cultural events and its own fishing competition; the programme may vary from one edition to the next. The festival returns annually, while the open-air play is staged every two years. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates.
Island trails and wildlife
The protected Froan landscape lies close to Mausund, which serves as a natural gateway to the area. Froan is considered one of the coast’s most species-rich natural areas; white-tailed eagles, seals and a diverse birdlife are among its characteristic features. The wildlife offers opportunities for nature watching, although individual sightings are not guaranteed.
The “Turtriangelen på Mausundvær” circular trail links three destinations across three islands. Its hills and open landscape offer good views. The rich birdlife along the route on Mausundvær includes herring gulls, European shags, white-tailed eagles, cormorants, ptarmigans and geese. In the area around Mausund, Mausundgløtt runs white-tailed eagle safaris.
Boat trips and island hopping
A five-hour island-hopping tour departs from Sistranda or Dyrøya and visits Sula, Bogøyvær and—if time allows—Mausundvær. The route and availability may change; check the details for your chosen date. Wold Kysttransport also offers trips on two fast passenger boats, with Mausund among the destinations. Along the way, you can experience old fishing villages, coastal culture and nature up close.
Food and refreshments
Havna Kafe on Mausund serves, among other things, halibut, Fiskeball, whale specialities and pizza. The menu may change; check the current offerings before visiting. Matrosen is a pub and restaurant on Aursøya in Mausund. The venue has a large outdoor area and hosts events throughout the year; its programme and services may change.
