Cultural history in Mebonden
When choosing a place to stay in Mebonden, cultural history and trails offer clear points of interest. Selbu Bygdemuseum is located in Mebonden in Selbu’s old rectory, near Selbu Church. Romboleden: route and navigation
A 15-kilometre section of Romboleden runs from Mebonden to Peder Morset folkehøgskole, passing through Mebonden’s cultural landscape. In the wider destination of Selbu, Romboleden is Norway’s oldest pilgrimage trail; it runs from Tydal via Selbu to Trondheim. The trail is inadequately marked and is best suited to pilgrims who are familiar with using a map and compass. Check current route information before setting out.
Selbustien: trail, activities and beach
At eight kilometres, Selbustien is shorter than the 15-kilometre section of Romboleden; at the same time, activities and facilities are a central feature along the gravel path. Selbustien runs through Mebonden along the Nea and Selbusjøen. Along the route there are places to swim, opportunities for fishing, a pump track and a disc golf course. Picnic areas, toilets and a pizza oven add to the facilities. Vikaengene, the longest sandy beach in Trøndelag, is also along Selbustien.
Årsøya and practical information

There is also an accessible fishing pier and a free equipment-lending station. A toilet with a changing table is open daily throughout the year. Selbu as a cultural setting
In the wider destination of Selbu, the cultural setting extends beyond Mebonden. Knitting with two different-coloured threads was used in Selbu from 1856–1857 and laid the foundation for the Selbu knitting tradition; it quickly became an important source of income for the community. At Selbu Bygdemuseum, Selbu Husflidscentral organises guided tours and museum visits. Courses in the Selbu knitting technique, talks and workshops are offered on request and in collaboration with Selbu Spinneri. Confirm the booking details before your trip. In the wider destination of Selbu, Selbu Church is also one of the largest long churches in Trøndelag and is known for its excellent acoustics. Selbu’s cultural history also includes Kalvåa bygdetun, which showcases older craft and summer-farm traditions.
