Skaun appeals to travelers who want to combine church art, pilgrim routes and local history. A prominent cultural landmark is the Skaun Church in Venn; the Pilegrimsleden leads right to it. If you’re looking for a hotel in Skaun, first consider whether culture, hiking or pilgrimage will shape your stay.

Church, Art and Local History

Skaun Church is a medieval stone church dating from around 1180. Its architecture combines early Gothic forms with many features of the older Romanesque tradition. Its furnishings include a rare early Gothic antependium dating from around 1250, depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The church thus highlights both the development of architectural styles and a specific work of religious art.

In addition to the church in Venn, the Skaun Village Museum features an exhibition on local history. Information panels, photographs and objects tell the story of the villages in Skaun. The church and museum offer different perspectives: one focuses on medieval architecture and art, the other on the history of the villages. Together, they offer a cultural perspective on Venn and Skaun.

Pilgrim Routes and Hiking

The Pilegrimsleden runs along Aunberga to Venn and ends at Skaun Church. The section through Skaun is 26 kilometers long. Wooden posts mark the route: wider posts indicate sights, while narrower ones show the route. These markers distinguish route guidance from signs pointing out places of particular interest.

Another route is the Gudbrandsdalsleden, which passes through Skaun on its way to Nidaros. The two pilgrim routes therefore follow different paths: the Pilegrimsleden is described as running from Aunberga through Venn to the church, while the Gudbrandsdalsleden passes through Skaun and continues toward Nidaros. There are also marked hiking trails around Aunberga, southwest of the center of Venn. More marked trails can be found nearby at SteinsĂĄsen by Laugen. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Venn and the Surrounding Area

The center of Venn lies in an open, bowl-shaped landscape. Farmland rises gently toward wooded hills that enclose the area. The open fields and wooded slopes together shape the landscape. Transport history also helps define the area: Venn is a historic transport hub. Today, three county roads meet there: Skaunvegen (Fv. 709), Melbyvegen (Fv. 6629) and Husbyvegen (Fv. 6620).

Nearby is Husaby in Skaun, where Einar Tambarskjelve lived. The site preserves the outline of an old estate church built around 1040 and a memorial stone dedicated to him. Husaby is also associated with Sigrid Undset’s novel Kristin Lavransdatter. East of Husaby, the farm Skreddarhaugen is part of the Skaun Village Museum: the farmhouse dates from 1750, and the barn from the 17th century.

A Broader Perspective on Skaun

As additional regional context, the wider destination of Skaun offers more nature-related attractions. The Grønneset recreation area lies on Lake Ånøya and is characterized by forests and meadows. Visitors can swim, walk, fish, play ball games, play and barbecue there. For trip planning, the municipal hiking guide “På tur i Skaun” features 41 hiking suggestions. Buvikfjæra, also within the wider destination of Skaun, is home to a relatively intact delta and foreshore area with a high density of birds. It is important for overwintering birds and as a stopover during spring and autumn migration.

You can choose a hotel based on what you want to explore during your stay.
