Hjartdal’s cultural landscape can be seen in its protected mountain and forest areas, as well as in its farm history, handicrafts and stories. There are also trails, a mill, water and seasonal activities. When planning your trip, you can choose based on whether you’re looking for longer hikes, a bike ride or insights into local traditions.

Cultural Landscapes and Local History

The Brattefjell-Vindeggen Landscape Protection Area includes parts of Hjartdal. It protects unspoilt high mountain and mountain forest landscapes, a wild reindeer population, a rich variety of plant and animal life, and valuable cultural landscapes and heritage sites. Together with Svartdal, Hjartdal is recognised nationwide as a designated cultural landscape of particular value.

Kulturlandskapssenteret offers guided tours, lectures and cultural programmes about agricultural cultural landscapes; details depend on the arrangements made. Groups are received by appointment. The visitor area is located at Holm Landhandel and the nearby Kulturlandskapsskulen. Tuddal Bygdetun also tells the story of farm life: this open-air museum in Hjartdal municipality comprises 13 traditional farm buildings, the oldest of which dates back to the 17th century. Visiting arrangements vary by season.

Hiking and Cycling

Prestevegen runs through mountain and forest terrain between Fellessetra in Hjartdal and Hogstul in Tuddal. The hike is listed as taking six to eight hours. Markers bearing the letter P and around 20 name signs show the way along the route; several camping spots are located along the trail. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season. Check the markers and local camping conditions on site.

Sogevegen offers another way to explore the area: the 25-kilometre cycling route passes through Hjartdal, Svartdal and Flatdal and can be started in Gvammen in Hjartdal. Holm Landhandel is part of the tourist route. Cultural landscapes, art and stories shape its character. Sogevegen thus combines a specific cycling route with themes that are also central to Hjartdal’s cultural offerings.

Mill, Farm and Regional Specialities

Hjartdal Bygdemylle offers guided tours of the mill and a themed exhibition about the history of farming and grain in the mountain villages. If needed, confirm the details of a tour on site. The mill still produces barley flour in different grades and pearl barley. A visit can therefore offer a look at both the history of grain cultivation and ongoing local production.

At Nordbø Gard og Stule, cheese, butter, sour cream and prim are made according to old local traditions. Demonstrations of cheese and dairy production are also offered; production and demonstrations depend on seasonal arrangements. In July and August, everyone can visit Bjordal Stule. Traditional rømmegrøt, coffee and waffles are served. As seasonal dates may change, check visiting dates in advance.

Water, Handicrafts and Winter Activities

At Egderudfossen, there is a paved bathing area with natural rock pools. The Myllestigen stepped bridge offers lovely views and safe access closer to the water. At Funnerfellen on the Øvre Funner farm, sheepskins are turned into colourful rugs and embossed with special patterns known as skinnfellroser; visitors can visit Funnerfellen.

Saga Sauna is located on Lake Hjartsåvatnet at the Presteodden rest area and offers views over Hjartsjåvatnet. Booking and operating arrangements may change; check them before your visit. In winter, ski trails are groomed around the Kjerringstein Trail, with conditions varying seasonally. Those interested in traditional farming can also attend the scythe-mowing festival, with competitions in the art of mowing with a scythe. It has been held every summer in Hjartdal since 2000; check the dates separately.

When looking for a hotel in Hjartdal, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Prestevegen is a hike with a stated duration, while Sogevegen is a 25-kilometre cycling route. The mill, cultural landscapes, handicrafts and seasonal activities offer other themes to explore during your stay. You can use the experiences you plan to enjoy as a guide when searching for accommodation.
