Vråliosen: Waterways and Cultural History
Accommodation in Vråliosen
Explore Vråliosen by water, along the Vråvatn rundt cycling loop and through the history of the village. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Vråliosen, you can first consider whether a lock cruise, a cycling loop or historic buildings should shape your stay. The following information outlines these options and distinguishes the boat trips from the history of transport in the area.
Travelling to Vråliosen
The M/S Fram’s major lock cruise travels to Vråliosen through the Småstraum and Storstraum locks. As programme details may change seasonally, check the information for the specific trip in advance.
A guided, five-hour Kulturarvcruise travels on Lake Nisser from Vrådal to Vråliosen. Captain Reidar Skogheim, «æresmatros» Olav Tveitane and historian Magne Wraa tell stories about the region’s and Vråliosen’s cultural history. As departure dates and booking details may change, check them before planning your trip.
Vråliosen on the cycling loop
On the Vråvatn rundt cycling loop, cyclists reach Vråliosen after about halfway around and see the old Vråliosen Hotel and guesthouse there. The southwestern road section is part of National Cycle Route 2 along the Telemark Canal. The village’s role depends on the route: it is the destination of the major lock cruise and an approximate halfway point on the cycling loop. Check route conditions, signage and surface locally.
Traces of transport and hotel history
Vråliosen Hotel was built in 1895 in the romantic style. Historically, it served as overnight accommodation for travellers taking the scheduled boat service between Tveitsund and Vråliosen on Lakes Nisser and Vråvatn, before continuing over Haukeli by horse-drawn carriage. The overnight stay was thus part of a specific historic travel route combining a scheduled boat service and onward travel by land. If you are planning to visit the building, check access and its current condition beforehand.
The VAREHALL/BRYGGE building is classified as a goods warehouse and packing house dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. The history of older shipping is also part of the village’s past: after the lock at Storestraum was completed, the steamship «Dølen» was able to travel to Vråliosen from 1868. The Vråvatn/Nisser waterway in the municipality of Kviteseid was once an important route for people and timber. The locks, steamship and historic hotel function thus represent different aspects of the region’s transport history.
Paddling and cultural history in Kviteseid
A 60-kilometre paddling route is possible from Vråliosen to Treungen. Before setting out, check water conditions, equipment availability and access to the starting point. This will help you plan the route as a paddling trip in its own right and take the necessary practical considerations into account in advance.
Kviteseid also offers its own cultural and historical points of interest. Kviteseid gamle kyrkje is a stone church dating from the late 12th century. Its ceiling is decorated with 20 panels painted by Thomas Blix in 1714. Kviteseid bygdetun was founded in 1907. The Tveitloftet there dates from before the Black Death; Utsondhalli presents the sculptor Gunnar Utsond.
