Notodden: UNESCO Industrial Heritage, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Notodden
When looking for a hotel in Notodden, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the town brings industrial history and art together with waterside paths, hikes and events. The Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage Site shapes the town’s history. Nature and cultural attractions offer other perspectives on the surrounding area.
Industrial history on Lake Heddalsvatnet
Notodden is one of the industrial towns that form part of the Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage Site. The industrial facilities were connected by rail and ferry links to the ports where fertiliser was loaded. On Lake Heddalsvatnet, a section of the shoreline is part of the Notodden component of the World Heritage Site. Its industrial waterfront comprises buildings dating from 1907 to the 1920s. The Industripromenaden walking path runs along the shore in the heart of Notodden. Over two kilometres, it connects a natural setting with industrial history.
Hydroparken was the site of the world’s first industrial production of artificial fertiliser and is part of the Rjukan–Notodden UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tinfos kulturmiljø is also an important part of the World Heritage Site and tells more than 200 years of Norwegian industrial history. Tinfos II, also known as Borgen, is a power station more than 100 years old that is still in operation. It retains original production equipment from the early 20th century. These places offer different insights: into industrial production, preserved technical heritage and the development of an entire industrial landscape.
Exhibitions and regional history
The Verdensarvsenteret is located at Tinfos in a protected industrial park. It provides information about the electric arc furnace and the production of artificial fertiliser. This helped transform a difficult global food situation and develop Norway from a poor agricultural society into a modern welfare state. The centre has a large free car park and accessible facilities; operating arrangements may change. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Also located at Tinfos is the Telemark Art Museum. Its exhibitions of contemporary art alternate with historical exhibitions featuring art from Norway’s Golden Age. Heddal Bygdetun, meanwhile, has 15 historic buildings dating from the Middle Ages to 1930. The permanent exhibition includes seven Anne Bamle bunads, two of which are more than 100 years old. The art museum and open-air museum offer different perspectives: one through changing and historical art, the other through historic buildings and traditional garments.
Hiking trails and a swimming spot
For a summit hike, Eikeskartoppen is one option: the summit is 415 metres high, and the route is about two to three kilometres round trip. The hike is possible year-round; from the top, panoramic views extend across Lake Heddalsvatnet and Notodden to Lifjell in the distance. The Folkestien offers a different landscape. It follows the slowly flowing Heddøla through the broad, scenic Heddal Valley in Notodden Municipality.
Tinnemyra is a family-friendly swimming spot in Notodden Municipality. The bathing area has a sandy beach, calm water and a swimming platform. Along with the hiking trails, it reveals a different side of the destination from its industrial waterfront: options range from a short summit hike described in kilometres to a stay by the water. The stated distance for Eikeskartoppen is for the round trip.
Blues festival and travel planning
The Notodden Blues Festival has been held since 1988 and attracts 30,000 to 40,000 visitors to Notodden every year. Its programme includes club concerts, blues cruises on Lake Heddalsvatnet, church concerts, band workshops for young people, and events for children and families. The types of events may vary from one edition to the next. If the festival is a key part of your travel plans, check the dates and programme for your intended visit.
Notodden is the terminus of the Bratsberg Line from Skien. If travelling by train is an option for your journey, check passenger services before making plans. Whether your stay is mainly about industrial heritage, exhibitions, the festival or the landscape, you can plan around the specific attractions; it is worth checking the latest information for visitors and events.
