Accommodation in Porsgrunn
Porsgrunn combines the history of porcelain production with maritime experiences, art and opportunities to enjoy the fjord. When looking for a hotel in Porsgrunn, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to explore collections and manufacturing, learn about the city’s history, or spend time by the water and on walking trails?
Porcelain: History, Collection and Production
The Porselensmuseet presents the full history of porcelain production in Porsgrunn. The Tollboden porcelain collection at Bymuseet i Porsgrunn offers another perspective: it includes several thousand objects, among them porcelain from the first firing at Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik in 1887, as well as pieces dating up to the year 2000. This brings together the history of production and a collection spanning the period up to the turn of the millennium.
During the week, you can join a guided tour of Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik and see the production process up close. At the factory, you can also watch porcelain painters decorate pieces, including with the world-famous Strå pattern. Tours are available on specific dates; availability and schedules may change, so it is worth checking the details in advance. At the Porselensmuseet, children can create and decorate their own porcelain cup or plate from the production of Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik. Workshop formats may change.
Maritime Experiences and Art
DuVerden is located in Sjøfartens Hus in Porsgrunn and is a maritime-themed science and experience centre. Interactive exhibitions explore maritime history and science. Visitors can, among other things, test their reaction times and operate a boat simulator. The logistics zone also features a ship simulator and a crane simulator for loading containers. Individual installations may change.
Kunsthall Grenland produces and presents contemporary art in Porsgrunn. Sculptures by artist Marit Bente Nordheim also stand along the waterfront promenade in Porsgrunn. The Ælvespeilet cultural centre hosts concerts featuring national and international artists, as well as theatre, shows and performances for children. Its Barnespeilet concept offers accessible cultural activities for children; the current programme may vary. If you would like to attend a performance, check the dates in advance.
Historic Districts and Gardens
Osebrostrøket is one of Porsgrunn’s oldest residential districts and includes historic buildings. The Historic Garden by the old vicarage has been restored to reflect its appearance in the late 18th century. Historic plants and vegetation define the garden, which is maintained by the Municipality of Porsgrunn. In Moldhaugen, old houses and boathouses have been preserved, illustrating building traditions from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Mule Varde offers a different perspective on historic gardens: this ornamental garden lies by the fjord and combines attractive paths and swimming beaches with the charm of the 19th century. Together with the residential districts and the porcelain collection, it offers a range of ways to explore the city’s history.
Beaches and Waterfront Trails
Olavsberget is a large, family-friendly sandy beach on Eidangerfjord. Its listed features include a diving tower, rocks and service facilities; check their current condition before your visit. The Osebakken bathing area is located almost in the centre of town and is set up as a place to stop for swimming, sunbathing and barbecues. Porsgrunn also lists a sandy beach, lawns and a pier there. Advance booking is required to use the sauna; check the current booking procedure beforehand.
Røra badestrand offers a sandy beach and rocky areas, as well as a café, a children’s playground, an accessible toilet and good parking facilities. Individual amenities may change. If you would rather go for a hike than visit a beach, Valleråsen has an easy trail of about 2.2 kilometres in Bymarka, east of Porsgrunn. It offers views of the city and the fjord. Beaches, garden paths and hiking trails offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
