Vinje offers a wide range of starting points for planning a trip: winter sports, literature and contemporary history, hiking trails, bathing spots and seasonal pastries. The topics that interest you most can also guide your search for a hotel in Vinje. The individual excursions vary in terms of activity and season.

Winter Sports in Vinje

Rauland Skisenter operates the ski areas of Vierli, Tiur and Holtardalen. Together, they have 12 lifts and 26 downhill runs. For cross-country skiing, Vinje offers more than 150 kilometres of groomed trails in Åmot, Våmartveit, Kostveit and Øyfjell. This lets you choose between alpine runs and trails in several of the areas mentioned. Trail grooming can vary by season; check the current trail conditions before planning an outing.

Experience Literature and History

Vinjesenteret is a museum of literature and journalism. Its focus is on Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, Aslaug Vaa, Tarjei Vesaas and Halldis Moren Vesaas. Visitors can view exhibitions, play games about source criticism, follow a children’s trail and read in a reading corner. Alongside the exhibitions, there are also opportunities to explore sources through play or enjoy some quiet reading.

The Forsvarsmuseet in Vinje focuses mainly on the fighting at Vinjesvingen in 1940 and everyday life during the Second World War. The museum is open for guided tours during the summer season; outside the season, guided visits can be booked by arrangement. Guided tours of Vinjestoga at Vinjesenteret can also be booked from May to November. Check the dates for these visits in advance.

Smørklepp kunstmuseum focuses on an extensive collection of paintings by Henrik Sørensen and Harald Kihle. Opening arrangements vary by season. If you include museum visits in your travel plans, be sure to take the relevant season into account.

Hiking Trails, Log-Driving History and Bathing Spots

The family-friendly Fløtarvegen follows Hyllandsfoss and passes traces of the timber-floating industry, including old stone walls, mills and power-generation facilities. Several rest areas by the river offer places to linger, and on warm days there are opportunities for a swim. The trail combines a hike with a glimpse into the river’s former use.

At Spegle Hyllandsfoss in Åmot, a sauna sits on a historic stone wall from Vinje’s log-driving history. A sturdy wooden bridge leads to the sauna. The area is also set up for a refreshing swim in Hyllandshylen. Here, the connection to log driving is evident not just along a trail, but also in the stone wall on which the sauna stands.

For a marked hiking route with specified distances, take the trail from Kappelnuten to Fonnlinuten: it is about 2.7 kilometres long and reaches a summit 650 metres above sea level. From there, the view extends towards Åmot. The approximate trail length and elevation provide two specific reference points for planning.

Ormetjønn in Åmot is a family-friendly recreation area with a circular trail and a child-friendly beach. Along the circuit, signposted detours lead to the remains of former smallholdings and to Trolldomssteinen. This lets you combine time by the water with a look at former settlements and the marked detours.

Reinparken in Edland also offers a range of activities: it has a cycling facility, a jogging and hiking trail, and a bathing spot. The facility also caters to tourists, other travellers passing through and visitors to Vinje.

A Seasonal Stop and Directions

Mjonøy has a wood-fired bakery known for fresh pastries baked in a stone oven. It is open from Easter until autumn; seasonal opening hours may change. Check current opening hours before visiting. For regional orientation, Vinje lies on the E134 between eastern and western Norway.
