Steinsland: Cultural History at Tjeldsund
Accommodation in Steinsland
Steinsland is located on the mainland side of the Tjeldsund strait, in Tjeldsund municipality. Steinsland Klyngetun is a cultural heritage highlight of the area and one of the last surviving cluster farmsteads in Northern Norway. If you are interested in historic buildings and exhibitions, you will find a range of topics here, relating to specific buildings and the history of the former municipality of Skånland.
Exhibitions at Steinsland Klyngetun
The cluster farmstead displays 2,000 objects in an authentic setting from around 1920. One exhibition is dedicated to Regine Normann, the Northern Norwegian writer: objects, stories, texts and pictures bring her life and work to life. It focuses on both her personal story and her literary work.
The old barn houses a cultural history exhibition about the former municipality of Skånland. Built in 1922, the barn also houses a permanent exhibition on Sami culture. These topics have different focuses: one exhibition looks at a municipality, another at a cultural history, while the presentation on Regine Normann follows the life and work of an individual.
Historic buildings and their uses
Aronstua was built before 1845 and is furnished in its original style with furniture and household items. The building served as a schoolroom until 1910. The cluster farmstead also includes a dwelling house dating from 1840. The farm mound associated with the site dates back to the Middle Ages. Behind the barn stands a partly restored granary, said to date from the 18th century. The dates and former uses give your visit a tangible connection to each building, rather than presenting the site simply as a collection of old houses.
The nearby area also holds traces of coastal history: at Steinsland 3, there are old boathouses, as well as traces of a ferry quay and other maritime activities. These remains add topics relating to boats, ferry traffic and the use of the sea to the story of the area.
Getting there and planning your visit
Steinsland was formerly a ferry landing for the road connection to Hinnøya. The Tjeldsund Bridge on the E10, which opened in 1967, replaced the ferry connection from Steinsland to Lilleeng on Hinnøya. A new combined pedestrian and cycle path connects Steinsland to the Tjeldsund Bridge; it opened on 3 December 2025.
Steinsland Klyngetun is 800 metres past the underpass beneath the E10, just beyond the Tjeldsund Bridge on the left-hand side of the road. As the road layout may change, check the current route before setting off. Contact Steinsland Klyngetun in advance to check whether a visit is possible. Enquiries are handled Monday to Friday during working hours.
