In Borhaug, the range of topics spans coastal history, art and nature education. If you are looking for a hotel in Borhaug, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: maritime history, art or the Lista wetland system. Each location and exhibition has its own distinctive focus.

Coastal history in boats and exhibitions

The Listeskøyta Coastal Culture Centre is located at Havneveien 27, 4563 Borhaug. It focuses on the history of the Listeskøyta, a type of boat developed by Gjert Gundersen around 1814. The boats had a large cargo capacity, were easy to row and sail, and were also fast. They were used for piloting and fishing.

Other topics covered by the centre include cargo shipping, fishing and shipwrecks. Visitors can also see the escape boat “VA-92L”, which travelled from Lista across the North Sea in 1941. At Eddabua, the approximately 200-year-old Uggerbyskipet is displayed as part of an exhibition commissioned by Agder County. The maritime perspective thus ranges from the characteristics and use of a type of boat to individual vessels and historical events.

Lighthouse, nature and wetland system

The historical exhibition in the Maskinhuset at Lista Lighthouse explores the period when the lighthouse station was the largest in the world, as well as the many shipwrecks off Listalandet. A model of the lighthouse shows its distinctive signal, with a flash every four seconds.

The nature exhibition in the Uthuset at Lista Lighthouse offers a different perspective and is aimed at both children and adults. Drawing on 30 years of counts and bird ringing at Lista Bird Observatory, it provides insight into the migration of small birds.

The Lista Wetland Visitor Centre at Lista Lighthouse provides information about the Lista wetland system through exhibitions and information and educational programmes. Topics include its internationally recognised conservation values, Lista’s Ramsar sites, protected areas around Lista Lighthouse, the Slevdalsvannet nature reserve and bird migration on Lista. School groups are welcomed year-round; nature experiences for groups and individuals are tailored to their needs.

The nature offerings have different focuses: the Uthuset explores bird migration through counts and ringing of small birds, while the Lista Wetland Visitor Centre focuses on the wetland system and its conservation themes.

Art and changing exhibitions

Since Agder Kunstsenter and Kunstpunkt Lista took over gallery operations in 2017, Kunstpunkt Lista has produced and shown numerous exhibitions throughout the year. These mainly include solo, group and curated exhibitions of visual art and crafts from Agder. Kunstpunkt Lista also presents contemporary art in changing indoor and outdoor exhibitions.
