Tingvatn: Archaeology and Early History
Accommodation in Tingvatn
Tingvatn is home to an archaeological focal point: Tingvatn fornminnepark. The “De udødelige” exhibition takes you back to the Early Iron Age; stone settings and burial mounds from the Migration Period connect the subject to the archaeological sites. The offering is complemented by the annual Jernalderting, seasonal craft activities, and Hægebostad Bygdemuseum.
The “De udødelige” exhibition
The archaeological exhibition introduces the ancestors of the Vikings. It also covers the Migration Period in Lister, dated to the period from 375 to 550 AD. Text, sound, images, colours, and stories convey the content. You will encounter different forms of presentation, while the stone settings and burial mounds in the park are archaeological traces from the same period.
Visitors can see the stone settings and burial mounds in Tingvatn fornminnepark. The park is also the old thing site for the villages of inner Agder. The site's historical significance therefore extends beyond the exhibition: Tingvatn links Iron Age themes with a meeting place for the villages of the region.
Jernalderting and crafts
Jernalderting Bjørnevåk is held annually in Tingvatn fornminnepark. The programme at the prehistoric archaeological site and museum includes talks and activities for the whole family. Bjørnevåk is a meeting place for people interested in traditional crafts and historic building methods. If you are planning to travel specifically for the event, check the dates in advance.
Seasonal activities at Tingvatn fornminnepark include spinning with a hand spindle, making cords with a cord-making tool, and weaving on a warp-weighted loom. The seasonal programme may change. So check which of these activities are offered during your visit before you travel.
Visitor information in Tingvatn
In addition to Tingvatn fornminnepark and the visitor centre, there is a free motorhome parking area with electricity and water hookups. In the park, both the indoor area and the courtyard are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. This information can help you take local facilities and the park's accessibility into account when planning your visit.
Hægebostad Bygdemuseum in Tingvatn is an old residential building owned by the municipality, associated with a prehistoric archaeological site. During the season from June to August, the museum may offer guided tours. By arrangement with teachers, these can be combined with a visit to the archaeological site and a nature trail. Check in advance whether a guided tour can be offered on your visit date.
In the wider destination of Hægebostad
The wider destination of Hægebostad also offers guidance for travellers looking for other landscape and hiking experiences in addition to Tingvatn's cultural heritage. Elvestien is a well-maintained hiking trail about six kilometres each way. It runs along the west side of the Lygna between Bautaparken in Snartemo and Birkeland. The Rofjell hiking route passes traces of earlier settlement, including house foundations, the foundations of a mill house, and an old livestock trail from the 19th century. The wider destination of Hægebostad thus offers both historic archaeological sites and settlement traces along a hiking route.
